View Full Version : June Entry - Captain Nemo's Secret Island Base

06-02-2010, 03:09 AM
For this month's challenge my idea is to create a map of the hidden base of Jules Verne's Captain Nemo, partly inspired by the movie with James Mason and Kirk Douglas.

So far I'm still working on the concept, but the map will show the place of the docks, crew quarters, generator rooms, guns etc.

uhh.. sounds good - love that universe, hope you can capture the look :)

Cool idea! I've been dithering between 4 or 5 ideas for the past few days :(

First idea for the island shape.

I already love the texture/vibe this map has, and you've not even started on what no doubt will be the best bits!--I picked a bad month to enter into my first challenge!

Thanks, BombBomb.
And there are no bad months to enter a challenge! ;) Your Dark Night idea looks great.

The more entries the better.

I think a more isometric view might be the better approach to this map.

Looking good Sep. I'm with Gidde I can't make up my mind on what I should try and have almost paralyzed myself on this one. Running out of time too now. :/

Once again there are a lot of fantastic looking entries this month.

Added some building and the Nautilus. I'm not completely satisfied with the buildings. Anyone with ideas?

06-16-2010, 03:05 AM
that looks good, I don't really know about ideas for the buildings... it all seems a little mellow to me, dark damped colors, a little lighter perhaps. Or you could add some more harbour stuff, a crane, some crates and barrels. I feel the water could use a slight tint of blue - and if the sub is going to hit the hole in the wall, you should probably draw in some bubbling water around it so we can see its diving :)

06-16-2010, 03:40 AM
Some good ideas, I'll add more details, maybe I also reduce the windows in size.

06-16-2010, 04:05 AM
Looking great - perhaps make it a little more steampunk? (lots of big wheels, gears, pipes etc?)

06-16-2010, 04:38 AM
good ideas; I see there is some room for improvement

06-16-2010, 05:17 AM
The Alan Moore graphic novel (later a film) 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' may give you some good ideas.

06-16-2010, 09:58 AM
Yeah, this looks like it is going to be super sweet when you are done. I would take a look at the buildings from that era and/or take Ravells' advice. I agree with Tilt as well, I would love a little color on the water if you can pull it off.

06-17-2010, 02:50 AM
I added a little bit more detail and blue water. Still not complete.

06-17-2010, 02:53 AM
now were getting there... nice colors both for the ocean and the gilding of the sub, and love the cranes and masts... very nice :)

06-17-2010, 10:07 AM
Yep, I like that swiggle on the side of the sub. Nice touch there. Can you make those brown roofs tile ones (http://kayraplenovich.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/roof-tiles.jpg)? Seems something like that would help them pop.

The waves look off. They are even all around the island, but the isometric buildings suggest that the waves at the top should be smaller than the ones at the bottom.

looks really good though.

06-18-2010, 02:12 AM
Thanks guys. Maybe I can put in your suggestions, but I'm in a little hurry for this one. Nevertheless, here is a 99% finished version. Please check for spelling errors or typos (my weak spot ;) ).

06-18-2010, 02:26 AM
looking good, like the extra gilding - very Nemo - all about the gold with that guy ;)

I think this looks really neato! I wonder if he'd need a garden of some type, though, or is taken care of by the undersea farms? I looked and looked, but I didn't see a #3. Do I need to go find my glasses?

Thanks for the hint at number 3. I knew, there's always something missing! I also slightly decreased the size of the waves in the northern part of the island.

#6: "Armorded dock"
"Captain Nemo's war against the war" s/b "against the world"?

06-19-2010, 07:08 AM
Thanks for the hint at the typo.

It is indeed 'war against the war', to typo. Nemo was, IIRC, fighting for revenge, but also had in mind a better world for the future. So I think it is appropriate to view this also as a fight against the horrors of war. In this respect he is similar to another Verne character, Robur.

I added some orchards to provide fresh fruit for the crew.

very nice... but I find a small path to the orchards is missing :)

06-22-2010, 02:26 AM
Well, now you will have no Scurvy dogs! hehe

06-22-2010, 03:30 AM
*lol* .. good one :)

06-22-2010, 10:45 AM
In looking at it again today I'm seeing very bright trees whereas the rest of the illustration is more muted. I think you need to wash out the orchards a bit and/or maybe add some scrub brush and such around the island to help tie them in.

Side Note: Why I keep looking at everyone's stuff when I should be focused on my own entry is a mystery. I think I've just been wiped out after work the last couple weeks and haven't had the energy to do anything. :/

06-22-2010, 11:36 AM
You can do it jax... just get in there... :) ... and he's right of course... :)

06-23-2010, 12:59 AM
Last edit. A path to the orchards and some more undersea plants added.

Yeah, I'm liking this one too, bro.

I like it as well, nice job.

I think the only I would change is the font you used - it seems a bit plain for Nemo. Everything else he does is so grandiose.

Super job Sap! It's been fun watching this one come together.
