So I was driving by an old garage, and stopped to take some photos of the chipped, peeling paint.

Here is one:

That I started with by tracing the bitmap in inkscape and moved tings around a bit, then brought the path into gimp to paint. Just playing with this technique, not sure how far I'll go with it. Most of the textures have come from genetica viewer.

Turn down the texture on the ocean and you got a winner there. Nice job, bro.

Agree with Ascension. The oceans as they are kind of draw the eye too much. The islands are great though. Love how you can make out all the little fields etc. Lovely.

Edit: I took you over 1000 rep. I feel honoured. :)

I've been working on my notebook which has a muddy screen, so I can beleive the water as a bit "much".

Thanks for the feedback!

Great idea. There's something funny going on with the mountaintops - they're a bit square and choppy? Otherwise looking great.

I quite like that about the mountains. Gives it an impressionistic vibe. The sea looks a lot better now Rob.

looks great rob - just goes to show "Maps are everywhere" :) ... a couple of weeks ago I was at my in-laws and was sitting in a chair looking at the sky, when suddenly I realised that the clouds made a beautiful "upside-down" bumpmap for mountains - didn't have a camera with me though.. :)

Now that is true inspiration, bravo sir! I once got inspired like that from looking at algae floating on a pond.

That's a very creative method! I love all the detail in there too. I want a beach house on the eastern shore! :p

I've found your next project RobA! A City map based on this photo. (http://www.boingboing.net/2010/08/26/interesting-crazing.html#more)

Major urban metropolis in that first one!

Added a border. Not just need a legend in the right hand side ocean and I'll call this done as a WIP.

looks good. You have an unnamed town right above Vental though
