For this map, I needed to create a town view for a tongue-in-cheek adventure I was creating for my son. I began with a traditional top-down version, but then stumbled onto crazyred's incredible perspective version of the Fallcrest Map - and decided that more cartoon-like buildings would be a perfect match for the silly characters my son would be meeting. The map was created entirely in Xara, and likely is my biggest time-sink to date. :)

Looks like a fun place. Is that a slide coming out the second story of the blue roofed building? I hope your son is old enough to get all the irony on this map.

I'd accidentally uploaded a slightly older version of the map, and updated it with the final version. Likely a refresh will take care of the link problem. Sorry!

This is really well done!

Ah, okay. Right, it's working now, so nevermind. :) The map is very cool. I expecially love the little people. :D

It reminds me of the Smurfs. That's not a bad thing; it's very professional, colorful, and cartoony and I'd give my left arm (cuz I'm right-handed) to be able to draw like that. CrazyRed is crazy talented and Fallcrest is always something I look at from time to time to remind myself what genius looks like. So now I have a clean version that also makes me feel inferior...thanks :) Heh heh.

Very nice map, love the buildings. I can imagine the time it took. Did you use a tablet?

Plus extra reps for using Xara, yay!

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

One thing I love about many of the maps produced by Guild members is the focus on using maps to add to the story, to encourage exploration and inspire the imagination. This map was definitely a 'tale that grew in the telling'... here's the title page of the resulting adventure, and the rest of the local inhabitants that didn't make it on the border... :D

Leatherhead Pete (hullo) and the Dire Potato Salad totally rock.

Thanks Fransie. I have an inexpensive tablet (Bamboo), but it doesn't see much use. I just can't seem to master the skill of 'looking at the screen while drawing over there somewhere', and always go back to the precise control of the mouse. I've lusted a bit after a Wacom Cintiq, but it's so spendy...

(And yeah, love Xara.)

Heh. Saw "spendy" in your last post and thought "must be from PNW" then I looked over to your location. LOL.

This is a seriously nice map and I'm doubly impressed you did it in a vector app. I can't draw for beans in Illustrator. Lots of character in this. The guy in the lower-left corner scares me a little.

Repped!

This is amazing stuff. Do you at least sketch it out with a pen or something and scan in or just wade in blind with the mouse and do vector work like that ? If your putting a line down do you dot the ends and make arcs or just draw with the mouse ? I cant draw anything with the mouse or trackball. I would either use a pen tablet or a real pen and scan. Even then it would pale against this.

My scanner ended up in the closet over driver issues, so the mouse it is! I usually use the node-by-node approach, adjusting the arcs as I go. I've begun sketching things to a 'blue line' layer recently to see if I can get comfortable using that as a reference for the node-by-node work.

Thanks for the kind words. :)

Is that a NorthWest thing? I love that Guild members come from *everywhere* - but it's nice to have some local color as well ;)

Thanks for the rep.

I normally don't really 'feel' a lot of overland maps like this but the artstyle here was really great. Have some rep.
