Nothing really mind-blowing here, just gonna do up a map of modern-day manhattan, in the style of a 19th century map ;)

Starting with the coastlines....

Well, the easy part was easy :)
Yea, that is why it is called the easy part :P.

The map is lookin' great so far, I'm sure that this one will make it into the gallery.

Started in on the roads, and perfectionism reared its ugly head! Turns out my arbitrary decision of size for the map doesn't allow for the level of detail I'd like to have, so I'm going to scale it down to just the Lower Manhattan area, with the possibility of making Midtown and Upper Manhattan maps afterwards.

Woohoo, started over for the third (and it better be the final!) time :p Resized the map, scaled it down to just lower Manhattan, which somehow meant making the map itself bigger.... And slapped on a title box! But the text is blah.

Hmm is there still a limit on the maximum dimensions of an image? Can't seem to upload the wip :(

tilt
09-08-2010, 04:19 AM
there is a dimension limit and a filesize limit - but can't really remember the dimensions.. but the filesize is about 4,something Mb.

moutarde
09-08-2010, 12:26 PM
Yeah, the file size limit is 4.5 Mb, that's definitely not the issue ;) I seem to recall there was a megapixel limit or something like that, but the upload manager has no limits listed for the max dimensions....

I'm not posting to say anything useful...just wanted to sport my new avatar. :)

Edit: Apologies, Moutarde, I thought I was posting this on the challenge main thread, not your WIP thread.

I've combed the desert - and the only link I found was broken, but I've mailed the wise men that run this place :)

and nice avatar mearrin :)

No worries Mearrin, its a good avatar ;) Makes me wonder how to spiffy up my bottle o' mustard :p

And thanks Tilt, I suppose I should have just done that myself :o

Sized this image a bit smaller and seems to be working now. Started adding roads... this part is gonna take a little more than an hour or two I think ;)

Looking sharp. I like the title box at upper-left. The roads look great but, man, that's going to be a lot of work. This challenge would have to look at one of the most complicated pieces of human construction on the planet.

Looking great so far....love the water and the very simple paper color/texture. Hopefully you manage to keep your sanity doing those streets.

Oh and that title box is crazy cool. :)

I can't really take the credit for the title box, as the various pieces of it come from here: http://nadinepau-stock.deviantart.com/ but thanks anyways :)

That's cool stuff. Thanks for the link. I imagine I can use that in some Call of Cthulhu materials at some point.

Added more roads. Yeah, that's all ;) I figure I must have done at least a third of em by now!

Here we go! Roads are all drawn in! Still have to merge some of them together for overpasses and underpasses and such, but I can finally start doing other work now :P

that looks beautiful - love the subtle water lines and the shield - the text in the shield could use some embellishment, but I'm guessing its just a placeholder :)

moutarde
09-16-2010, 07:49 PM
Thanks tilt :) I'm still undecided about the text though. I don't really like it, but there's also not a lot of early 19th century fonts to choose from :p I'll probably end up taking some artistic liberty with it, but who knows what yet...

Started filling some of the blocks that only have buildings in em. Parks and stuff are going to be differently, more of an actual overhead view, but the building are all going to be representational.

I say, take all the liberties with the font you want - a shield like that would have hand drawn letters, so anything hand drawn would go imho

Holy crap, an update!?!?! I'm hoping to have all the buildings and trees inked in before I go to sleep tonight, then labels and details on sunday... This thing will get finished dammit! :)

Jeez who knew there were so many buildings in Manhattan?? :P Not quite finished the buildings, and no further progress on trees. Gonna have to steal a few hours here and there to get back on track. I kinda feel like I'm back in college again - procrastinate till just before the due date, then work my derriere off at the last minute 8) Don't think I'll be able to manage any all-nighters though....

great work you're doing - and now that you're in practice could you finish my city Breakwater for me *lol* ... fun aside, it looks great - love the little trees :)

moutarde
10-29-2010, 07:14 PM
Haha sure thing Tilt, I'll get right on that :)

Lunchbreaks need more hours in them! Literally just scribbling trees all over the place! :P

damn, thats a lot of trees :) ... have you got any plans for the lower right corner yet? ... it seems so empty

moutarde

Yeah, I left lots of room there and in the top right corner for labels - hopefully not too much room :)

moutarde

Starting to come together, at last! Still need to type in the 93 locations, whip together a scale bar, and maybe add some more detail to the park areas if there's any time at all left :P

Well, I think I can call this complete. Could still end up doing some more work on it - but I need to break for a little bit after working on so much this weekend :P

The attached image is a low quality, half-size version. Actual finished version doesn't fit on the site :)

Looks great!! The only thing I would suggest is adding an outer glow to the text that are over a building, it kinda hard to read.

moutarde
10-31-2010, 08:06 PM
Yeah I know what you're saying Gallifreyan... I guess I could make a modified version for the upload to cg. The text looks better on the full size version. Damn low quality jpeg! :)

moutarde
10-31-2010, 08:59 PM
Increased the glow on the labels for this version of the map, that's all :)

Just out of curiosity, does anyone else have a lot of issues with the file uploader saying that jpg's are sometimes invalid image files?

Sometimes I do get that message. I have this superstition that if the file is still open in photoshop, the image won't load to the forum.

Aval, I think you may be right. I end up closing Paint Shop Pro too - just in case!
