Check this link out (http://www.thezoomablemap.com/home/video.html)

Might be fun as a handout to players in RPGs - we would need to work out the principle behind it though, which I guess can't be difficult particularly if you have a real one to work with.

It's basically an origami trick, but I'm glad i thought of it! :)

neat... and a great idea too - we should make a competion for a zoomable map :)

"...London map. Patented folding..." - Let's hope he won't sue us.

hmmm can you patent a fold? ... not that I want to want to try it in court (not for a competition) - but one could always ask nicely - it would be publicity for his map. Then again - while its fun, its not really competition material... it is after all just a question of making 2 sizes of a map.

I bet it was invented in Japan circa 600 AD. :) In any case it's super-cool. I wish I had one of those for my city...I hate unfolding and refolding maps! Neat find Ravells.

So simple, so smart! Could have used that London one a little while ago!

Disturbingly there are a number of patents issued for folding maps:
http://www.google.com/patents?q=fold+map

I couldn't find one though that resembled this claimed patent (I was looking to find out how the fold was made which would be revealed in the patent).

I tried to make such a fold and it took about 10 seconds of playing with a scrap of paper:
29596

I have no problems posting this here. I would think the portion that could be patented would be the use of such a fold to create a "zoomable map" and not the fold itself. It is virtual the same fold as used in a number of different origami projects i have seen previously.

yeah.. it would most likely be the fold in relation to a map, or it would be like patenting a color - which some companies have tried...
