View Full Version : September-October Mapping Challenge - New New York
09-07-2010, 08:26 PM
I've decided that I'm going to try do some "transformations" of New York. I've got a few ideas in mind:
a) A future military occupation takes a section of Manhattan or isolates it by land and across bridges from the area around it. Altering the layout and redirecting certain roads or bridges.
b) Possibly build a HUD/Handheld Digimap.
c) The US has been crushed by it's own financial issues and plummeted from the world stage. (No I'm not anti-US or a communist or anything like that... just making a speculation) This has left New York in the distant future as a micro-political warzone (Think Escape from LA...New York Style) but I'm not sure if I want it to be "Post Apocalypse" (i.e. the world has played catch the nuke) or "Result of Abandonment" (the rest of the world is just fine... the US however has dived and Canada has suddenly had to create a nice big military to keep the rabble from heading north from the USA). This would result in a city filled with Tribes/Gang/Power-Cliques... and mapping that. Probably futuristic style as well.
Any feedback from the people would be appreciated.

After trawling through a few others, I think I've hit an idea...
A New York Board-Game concept...
Something Political probably... maybe something more like Diplomacy/Risk... Actually I am brainstorming as I type... so I'm now seeing the Tribal-Warfare as a game concept... ooooooh. I'm feeling all inspired and much awesomeness is about to happen I think...

Here is the first scribbles...
New York broken into regions... about to be allocated to mythical tribes...

Sweet Idea - who will control new new york?
Maybe have corporates states... Trump Industries, Goldman Conglomerates, and of course the Rebels
nice juggs... I have a boardgame on the way too - but more of a fun stuff thing :) - no war :)
I look forward to see where it goes - will you make rules?
and don't you need a crown for your avatar? ;)

Well... I might scam one from somewhere to add to my lovely self...

Thats better !
It sounds like Escape from New York. There was a film before the LA one for new york. See here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082340/). It also had all but one bridge down and that was heavily guarded and the island was also a wreck but in this instance a huge penal colony.
If I had better creativity and art skillz I would so have loved to have done New York in the style of Judge Dredds Mega City One and the accompanying board game (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1098/judge-dredd). Have you guys seen that ? Its a bit of a collectors piece now but if you can ever get a copy then its worth it. There's no board game that is 10% as good as that one. If anyone has played it then shout cos I gotta compare strategy. I thought about and dismissed that idea right away but it would have been fun to do.
beautiful juggs :)
and Judge Dredd board game - never knew it existed, did play a roleplaying game once though.. but not for long as I recall.. and who doesn't remember Snake Plissken in escape from New York - great movie :)

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with...
09-08-2010, 09:13 AM
Here is the broad basics of the board and layout.
C&C desired and welcomed...
looking good, are you going to add some playing pieces - or notes on the rules? ... Maybe a logo for the different factions :)
09-09-2010, 06:51 PM
Here's an update. I've added in a few icons for each of the Tribes and I'm working on placing some counters around the map.
C&C as usual...
09-09-2010, 06:53 PM
As far as game mechanics goes, I'm thinking of diving into the GMT-Card-Based games style. I'd be happy to have rules collaborators for that, but atm I'm just making it look pretty for this contest.

What are your thoughts with the neighborhood colorations? does that reveal starting and neutral areas? Also, what happened to Sir Galahad in your sig?
09-09-2010, 10:49 PM
The browns are all "neutral" spaces. The brighter coloured spaces are "starting/home" spaces. I'm yet to really determine the longer term mechanics of owning areas of the board. I'm tempted to make it extra hand-size or similar.

Here's another WIP... more markers, more of the icons, etc.

Considering the medium Jugg, have you considered putting your "extra" stuff above and/or below the actual map? As it is, your map may be too compressed to display well on the gallery screens.
09-10-2010, 10:12 PM
Sure, new stuff that gets added will probably "square it up"
Particularly if I add rules or cards or other pieces. I'll just start by adjusting the boundaries and adding within that space.
09-11-2010, 12:18 PM
Ahem. You *are* going to make all of this available after the competition, aren't you? :) I love weird little games. You should add complete rules and pack it up into a little pocket-sized box and sell it. Looks cool so far!
09-12-2010, 06:57 PM
If/When this is finished and I can guarantee I haven't trodden on the copyright/IP of any major company with enough cash and attitude to sue what little I have away from me... SURE!
Just need to make sure I don't tread on copyright. I think it will turn up on BoardGameGeek and maybe through a friend of mine who is running a small boardgame enterprise.
Had a busy weekend: parents moving stuff into my garage, weddings, writing topic tests on coordinate geometry for 14-year olds (whatever grade they are in your part of the park).
09-13-2010, 02:49 AM
Finished off most of the markers I think... Might add some later. Now to just add cards and the like. Game design would come later but I am happy to get help from others about this.

Here is the next update. Created a card back and a layout for a card front.
Decided not to include artwork on the card front but instead have quotable quotes.
Also, just to flag it. All images used so far have been free for use for any purpose. Especially the photo of the Chrysler Building, which came from WikiCommons and is currently held by the US Library of Congress.

Looking pretty good. Agree about not duplicating art on front and back. If this hangs in the gallery you know people are going to want to buy and play the game. :)
09-14-2010, 06:50 PM
That would mean I'd actually need to, you know, make the game...
09-15-2010, 09:39 AM
Another card as a game component. I would be impressed with myself if I can manage to sorta design this game in almost 2 months.
09-15-2010, 12:05 PM
If these cards are picked or discarded from/to a pile, it might fill a rather "blank" space on your map if you had the card stack on The Bronx? At the moment that area looks a bit bare?
09-15-2010, 08:49 PM
Thanks for the C&C Crayons. I'm kind of building the game as well and deciding what I need to include in the game before I concretely chew up space on the board with stuff like the cards. So I suspect it will be filled soon, just not at the moment.
09-16-2010, 02:48 AM
This is an awesome idea, and I am rather upset I didn't think of it. :(
09-16-2010, 06:39 AM
Juggie - I'd love to see a bunch of "monopoly" style money stacks around the edge of the board--brightly colored with crazy pictures on them, or maybe caricatures of real U.S. dollars. Little plastic-looking pieces would be cool, too.
09-16-2010, 06:47 AM
Yeah, I've just got to figure out how to get the plastic pieces (and if they would work within the game...)
I might sit down and make some Crazy-Cash, might actually base it off the cash that we use in Australia. I keep hearing from US tourists that our money is quite cool/pretty/easy to use. It's brightly coloured and slightly differently sized for each denomination.
Thanks for the advice Reckless. I tend to like how your twisted brain works... :P
09-16-2010, 08:56 AM
Next update... Dummy Cash Included. Have fun spotting the new heads on the currency of the USA.

Beautiful, Juggie! My twisted brain loves it!
looks really good jugg - maybe some drop shadows on the items stacked on and about the map?
09-16-2010, 03:15 PM
Clinton money? What a distopia! *shudders* :D
09-16-2010, 09:37 PM
Looking good. I'd make the red canvas mat something more grungy. How about the underside of an overturned cardboard box, like the Times Square shell game guys use? :)
09-19-2010, 01:35 AM
I too like the idea of the shell-box off to the side, almost off camera, and maybe some dice laying around too. This 'map' has so much space for cool accoutrement!
09-19-2010, 03:05 AM
Yeah, I'm just trying to get the bits and pieces together. Headspace isn't quite right at the moment to keep it going for now. And I personally find it very hard to do top-down objects, like the box or the dice or any plastic figurines...
09-19-2010, 03:23 AM
Something that you can do to make top-down objects easier is to find a top-down photo of the object you want trace it and then color it and apply whatever shadows you want.It works well enough and gives the object a nice hand drawn look.
09-19-2010, 03:32 AM
Sure, I know how to do that sort of thing, but I can be a super fuss sometimes. There are parts of what I have already that grate me a bit and I'm either skeptical of my ability to fix them or unsure how to go about it.
09-19-2010, 11:32 AM
For the cast-off box top you could take a photo yourself...maybe a smallish puzzle box...and integrate that into the image. If you wanted to show the "cover", you could create one and then skew it to go over the existing picture on the box? Just a thought.
You've got me wanting to make a minigame. I used to love the minigames back in the 80s. Mmmm...Car Wars!
10-05-2010, 02:21 AM
Well I might get the chance to do all that now... I just spent a week in Fiji... minimal cartography maximum not-much-ness

I can very much recommend the resort I went to, but to avoid advertising on the forum... send me a PM or write on my profile page if you want the details of the place.
