I guess i am getting into the hobby a little late.

i am looking for a collection of textures and other content to get me starting mapping.

Reading this site and others, it seems the best was CSUAC, but no link to the files work any longer. Could someone make these available again? If i was givin a copy i would gladly seed a torrent of them for months to give back to the community.

Not legal to do so. From my understanding, all of the images came from Dundjinni's forums over the past few years, so they are all available over there on the forums if your looking for some specific stuff. There is also RPGMapshare.com which has a number of nice images.

Currently, there are several entities who are trying to work with the original owner of the CSUAC hosting site(GMsApprentice.com) to try to license the ability to host the files, but no luck so far.

Ok, but they had made this collection available for free download for years correct? And you say the content is still freely available on the forms, just not in a cleanly organised set of directories?

Correct. Mostly the issue has to do with Cecil (the person who gathered all of these files) contacted each and every artist and got permission to rehost the files in a collection. I also believe that he attributes each piece to the original artist. Just because something is free does not mean people have the right to do whatever they wish with it.

OK, thanks for the info. I wish i had gotten into this a few months ago, then i would have access to this resource.

I'm sure it will rise like a phoenix again at some point. I would assume that the issue is with his cost in bandwidth hosting it so if that were the only case it could be re-hosted elsewhere no problem. It may be that Cecil is belligerent but it may also be some entirely and reasonable reason like that he got permission from a number of the copyright holders on condition that he would not freely distribute it without some restrictions.

@jfrazierjr: If you know of any reason why its not being given the permission required to host and that we here at the guild could overcome it then let us know.

As mentioned on another thread, I know Azhrei has contacted him about possibly hosting the archive on the RPTools site, however.. I have no idea if they have actually "talked" or if Azhrei is just reaching out to him. I can try to find out from him though.

I've worked closely with Cecil for a few years now on the FM8 conversions of the CSUAC. To suggest that Cecil is belligerent is absolute nonsense. The symbols, objects, textures and fills in the CSUAC are the work and intellectual property of many people. These works are not in the public domain. The authors also did not release them under an open source license or anything similar. But they did give Cecil permission to distribute all of their work free to all of us under the CSUAC license, which is very liberal in terms of usage but restrictive in terms of redistributing the graphics in their original form as symbols, objects, textures and fills. When I think of the amount of unpaid time Cecil put into assembling and distributing this excellent collection, and the expenses he has occurred in doing so, seeing the word belligerent being associated with his name makes my blood start to boil a little.

I was pointing out that there might be a reason other than him being possibly belligerent that he did not allow the distribution... It seems much more likely to me that the reason he didn't distribute the files was more to do with the agreements he had with the sources than anything he personally wanted to do.

I'll maybe save a few people some time - don't bother looking for old versions of the site via archive.org . You had to log in to get to the CSUAC material, so it wasn't archived. Ditto for the GM's Parlor and GamemasterSyndicate sites- archive.org's bot doesn't pick up much in the way of .zip, .exe, .sit files.

On the other hand, there ARE other archives of Dundjinni Forum content - this thread (http://www.dundjinni.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=11001&PN=3) for instance. Somebody else will have to rummage around and say if there's usable / accesible art therein.... dungeon mapping quit being my forte' about thirty years ago :-). Or were / are these textures and objects usable for all scales of mapping?

That is them, but they used to be available a set of large zip files.

Thanks for the link.

Cecil has been silent for some time now, but you still can get the CSUAC at the mirror site:

http://www.halerecordings.com/gaming/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=29

These are in Dundjinni (R) format. If you use Fractal Mapper (TM) you need to add default.xml files to the catalogs. If you want to use them with CC3, you'll have to do a lot of conversions. The FM8 and CC3 versions are not currently available. The FM8 default.xml files are quite easy to add. For the details download our free raster mapping tutorial in the Vintyri (TM) Cartographic Collection section of our website:

There are authorized mirror sites where one can download the complete Fractal Mapper (TM) 8 and Dundjinni (TM) versions of the CSUAC free.

The Dundjinni mirror is operated by Hale Gaming, based in New Zealand. The FM8 mirror is operated by the Vintyri (TM) Project, based in Germany.

Download links for both the Dundjinni and FM versions of the CSUAC can be found at:

I received word today from Jim Hale that technical problems have forced him to move the authorized mirror download site for the Dundjinni version of the CSUAC. The new address is:

http://www.halegaming.com

The authorized mirror for the Fractal Mapper 8 version of the CSUAC remains unchanged:

http://www.vintyri.org/CSUAC/

If you forget Jim Hale's address, we also keep at linked at the Vintyri address above.
