We'll see if I can finish this.
I decided for an old-style map of an Renaissance/Viking-style civilization. The life containing 'worlds' are actually planet-sized moons of a gas giant.

Initially I had thought about a brownish looking map, but I like the colored version somewhat more.

Looking good so far...

First mountains and rivers added, also quarter circles in the corners of the map, which needs to be filled with some deco elements, probably famous explorers or their ships or important sites like a famous lighthouse. I'm open for suggestions.
Btw, this is 50% map size.

Has a bit of a different look but it's pretty cool all the same.

Thank you, Ascension. First I had thought about an old-style look of the 16th or 17th century, but then I thought this is another planet, the guys there like to make maps with fancy colours.

Sap... you are a true artisan. This is beautiful. Beautiful!!

Thank you, Diamond. I,m quite sure I can finish this.

Everything you touch becomes a thing of beauty, Sapiento. I love the land distribution you've got with all those islands. My favourite bit is the planetary slice in the middle, but the whole thing is just fantastic. Can't wait to see it finished. It's all so incredibly sharp too.

Thank you, ravs! I'm quite sure I can finish it in time, Christmas holidays should give me time enough.

I've added some trees in the northern region of the left side and also put some light on the mountains and hills.

More trees and a first idea for an illustration added. Three famous explorers of Maargard's history.
I welcome any C&C on the illlustration. I'm still not sure if it fits to the map. For the upper right I'm planning an expedition in the great desert, for the lower left a large, fortified harbor entry, for the lower right a very large light house.

Wow. Wow wow wow! I love those illustrations.

Thank you, Diamond. I'm not sure however if I keep them or if I place some smaller maps in the corners.

You could do maps on the right, pictures on the left...

Looking absolutely stunning, Sap!!!

I did away with the illustrations, I simply had the feeling they didn't fit with the rest of the map. Instead I will try to make some astronomical drawings. Maybe I find another way to incorporate the illustrations in a less intrusive way.

Ok, I guess this combination of illustrations and map/map parts could work.
The illustrations are now less intrusive and don't draw too much attention away from the actual map, at least that's my impression now. I would welcome some feedback on this issue.

Again this irritating upload issue :(

Yeah, I like the illustrations. That harbor one in particular is very nice. :)

I like the plain version, shrug. If you really want those corners filled then maybe you could just detail 4 important areas in either regional or city scale. If you want to go all out then fill all of that empty space with stuff like cherubs, horses, boats, monsters, etc. like those highly decorated maps. But that takes more time than making the map.

Diamond

I like that new version much better, Sap. You can still see the detail in the drawings, but making them smaller like that cleans them up and yeah, doesn't draw too much attention away from the map itself. And that harbor castle drawing is stunning, but it needs banners and flags from the roofs!!!

That's the road I'm on, and you're right. It's a killer. :(

Plus, I'm gonna get my ass kicked in this contest by, well, just about everyone, so it's probably all for naught. :D

I'm now restructuring the map again. I will make some inlay maps plus the illustrations plus the astronomical charts/drawings plus coat of arms - I guess I have to clone myself to do this in time! ;)

Ascension

That's why I avoid these kinds of maps - way too much work, way too little time. Hope you can do it.

Sapiento

It is work-intensiv, yes. But I hope the result justifies the effort.

Diamond

So who are the ancient men, exactly? Just older human civilizations, or something else?

Sapiento
12-28-2010, 08:30 AM
Thank you, guys!

Diamond, the ancient men are older civilizations which once ruled half the world. When the first tribes of the Gondals came, they defeated the kings of the ancient men and destroyed their realms one after another until only in the unkindly and unknown regions of the world their realms survived or their refugees founded new but weak kingdoms. Even now they fight a war for survival.

Sapiento

Well, I call this finished.
We have a map of an old civilization, with three famous explorers, two famous sites, one famous scene of history, two famous ships and some astronomical charts (not so famous).

Is it a typo where you note "Maargard's Cycle of Day and Night during ON turn around Ullagard" ?

All I can say is whoooooo-eeee, is this gonna be a hard vote to decide. A Splendid Map indeed, sir!

I agree, I've been so busy on mine this last couple weeks and I haven't posted on this but it is Smokin' Awesome. Every time I looked it sent me back to work like mad on my own :) Curse you, LOL. Then again, thanks for making me whip like mad all the way to the end.

Sapi,

Nobody I know has such a distinctive style that is also uniquely suited for commercial use. As always, lovely and enviable!

Thank you, guys, for all the great comments about my entry!
As there are so many fine maps this month, I get already now a headache for whom I shall vote.
