Hot damn this is looking good, you draw your 3d shapes very well, I can't wait to see an update to this!

ahh man.. Sap is entering again. Everyone needs to bring their A game. He must be stopped!

Looking really great Sap.

Thank you, guys. I hope I can come up to your expectations.

Another great start Sapi !! :)

Looks great as usual, Sapiento! Your eye for iso is amazing.

I changed the main building in the upper left town and added more detail. Now both points of light are on the map - Highstone in the upper left and Viewfort in the lower left.

More details added, also a first idea for one of the bad guys (a stone golem) which roam along the route. I'm not sure about the symbol, maybe it's too cartoonish to match the style of the rest of the map.

I don't think he looks too cartoony, but he does look rather cute and cuddly :O

Jaxilon

Hehe, it does sort of look like he's waving which lowers the threat level just a tad :)

The first thing that came to my mind for use as a reference for one of these (if you are interested) is a Rock-em-Sock-em-Robot (http://www.coolest-homemade-costumes.com/images/coolest-homemade-rock-em-sock-em-robots-costume-4-21311398.jpg). Of course I would modify the arms to be more rock-ish. The other thought was 'The Thing' from the Fantastic Four but you are already pretty close to that. You may need to carve in the joints between the rocks on this guy to lessen the marshmellowy look he kind of has. You know, rough him up a bit.

Thanks for the critique.
I've decided to use another view for the bad guys - instead of full view I will only portrait part of the upper body. So I can give the face more emphasis and hopefully bring more wickedness into the creature character.

He reminds me a bit of the Thing from the Fantastic Four :)

Sapiento
01-11-2011, 06:51 AM
He's in the trash can now. I already made first sketches for five creatures, which loo kmuch better IMO.

Ohhh Sap, this is turning out to be another beauty! I really like the 'cave dwellings' in the mesa!

Sapiento
01-11-2011, 11:24 AM
Thanks, ravells.

Here's a new version with a better 'stoneling'.

Looking good Sapiento! That guy looks much less friendly - well done :)

Gidde
01-11-2011, 07:31 PM
Yep, I like the new stoneling much better. The rest of the map is looking awesome. Those cliffs are gorgeous.

Sapiento
01-12-2011, 04:29 AM
I still have to do some refining on the stoneling, but I guess that's the right direction now.

Steel General
01-12-2011, 10:57 AM
Reminds me a bit of Igoo the Rock Ape from the Herculoids.

Sapiento
01-15-2011, 06:01 AM
I added more landscape details. The creatures need much rework. What I had so far is not really ready for use.

New sketches for my creatures.

To give the map some depth I added a foreground.

Now that's a tiny protoceratops - eating a fly. :)

Jaxilon

That's funny Ascension because I was thinking that it must be a huge insect instead, LOL

Gidde
01-20-2011, 08:13 PM
Definitely a dino, and I likes it :)

Sapiento
01-21-2011, 12:00 AM
It looks like a dino, but it is small. Well, hard to say within a fantasy environment and no man nearby to tell the scale. ;)

Sapiento
01-21-2011, 10:21 AM
I painted a skull in the foreground as point of reference. Additionally, the opponents of the traveler have been added.

Shhh, listen closey... that's the sound of a winning map. Loving this Sapiento, truly.

Sapiento
01-22-2011, 08:57 AM
Thank you, D! But with so many good entries I won't bet on anything!

Nevertheless, I added the labels and some light effects - to make real point of lights. Maybe I put on the 'values' of each creature; attack, defense etc., if this doesn't make the map to crowded.

Yeah Sap, you're the one to beat this month. nice job.

Sapiento
01-24-2011, 10:30 AM
Thanks, RjBeals.

I've added the combat values of the creatures. Attack, Defense, Health and Agility/Speed. My fear was it would make the map too crowded but I think that's not the case. Critiques?

What gaming system are those values to be used for Sap? I'm not the most experience table toper so it would be nice to know how this map is to be applied.

Sapiento
01-24-2011, 01:49 PM
It is no special gaming system, geamon, just a design idea for this map.

geamon
01-24-2011, 02:59 PM
Fair enough, regardless great work as usual.

I don't think it looks too crowded; I think it sets off the monsters. I particularly like the speed icon.

Good to hear this!

LonewandererD
01-25-2011, 08:33 AM
Personally, I think the stoneling seems to crowd the map a bit but the rest seem to balance it out. Marvelous work nonetheless!

I tried a parchment background for parts of the map, but I'm not sure about it.
Also added a little bit more detail around Viewfort.

Yeah, I think I liked it better without the parchment.

LonewandererD
01-27-2011, 10:01 PM
^Ditto. The parchment is good along the borders but not for taking a good proportion of the map.

Jaxilon

I agree with LW on this. I like it around the edges, not sure it's great taking up 1/3rd of the image though. It kind of looks like seeing it through clouds only they cover just the one side of the view which is sort of strange for some reason.

Sapiento
01-28-2011, 02:07 AM
Thank you, gentlemen. You confirmed my feelings.

Ascension
01-28-2011, 08:19 AM
I like the parchment but it looks unfinished to me. Maybe burn some edges, rip some, curl some, etc.

pindercarl

I don't think the style of the map is suited to a parchment treatment. This map has always had a Steinberg New Yorker cover feeling to me. It feels much more modern than parchment.

I did away with the parchment. Instead I placed short descriptive texts on the map.

Jaxilon
01-28-2011, 07:30 PM
Do you mean "Death and Pain" or as you have it, "Dead and Pain"?

Looks better. I liked the parchment you have though. I could use some more varieties myself but this one look gooder :) they way it is, hehe.

Sapiento
01-29-2011, 01:32 AM
Thanks for the hint, Jax. It's changed now.

I made some subtle color changes and added more detail.

As the creatures are so prominent on this map, I have to thank the guy who gave me good advice how to draw them: Dave Melvin. He is an excellent creature artist with stunning ideas and he was so kind to look over my first concepts and point me in the right direction how to improve my creature designs. It was like a quantum leap for me. Compared to my first concepts I'm now quite satisfied with the result. Take the time and visit his deviantArt (http://davesrightmind.deviantart.com/) gallery to see awesome monsters and creatures.
