View Full Version : January 2011 Challenge: Ice Cream Run

My entry will be more isometric experimentation using my wacom and limited art skills. On one side of the map will be the ice cream truck. On the other will be 3 screaming kids. The truck will have to maneuver through the city streets, avoiding fallen logs, cats, pot holes, maybe swing by the gas station... and whatever else makes it way into the streets.

I'm going to take a picture of my 3 kids, then warp it down, and cartoonize them. They are following the map, and helped with the theme. (the first choice was mermaids along the ocean floor, navigating through sea life and a sunken ship - but that's too big for me in a month.)

So with some heavy hitters entering this month, it will push me to better develop my artistic skills, which is all I want in the end. A fun map wouldn't hurt either :)

The kids are involved big time with this map, so it's leaning towards cartoonland. It's definitely a new style for me, but fun!

The city is taking shape...

I also like the style. It's very fresh and different, I love the clean-ness of it.

Cool - thanks for the thumbs up guys. Here's a bit more of the cityscape - it's taking me a while, hope I can finish this up in time!

The ducks in that town are freakin' HUGE!

I'm tempted to turn this map around into the mutant duckland. The map itself has a bit of a Dr Seuss feel. And that means, mutant ducks are totally acceptable....

More work on the city. Added a church and barn style fire station?

Soon I'm going to do the kids - they are excited about that.

Not exactly bobble-heads, but I'm sure they will be mutantly large.

Bit more city mapping. Playing around with some colors.

(edit) I see my pond layer got shifted so the building is floating, and some other junk is shifted. Damn

Getting close to complete this one. Thought if I had bloated ducks, might as well have an extra large deer crossing the steet also !

and look out mr. ice cream man, there's a tank around the corner!

This just keeps getting better and better, RJ. I wish I had something constructive to give you, I just ... don't. It's awesome.

Adding the tank is delightfully cartoony, loving it. The tank and the ice cream truck should play a game of chicken, ring the merry little bell of war!

Just about done, now to add the kids in the lower right..
Be glad you don't live here. Godzilla? Yes.
and notice the lone zombie in the upper right who's staggered into town.
The kids told me to add the school bus, not a great fit, but what the hell. This map has a life of it's own really.

(edit) I posted the map at 50% size, and probably will enter the map at this same size. I created it double size so I can print a copy out, but there's not need really to post it that big for this entry. Unless anyone has a reason? There's not really details that are lost when it's reduced.

I think the size of the pic is fine as is, great to see the whole pic, it really has taken on a life of it's own. Nice :)

okay this is all i can do for this map. I'm tied up with work and family, and I'm not going to have time to map - but I'm happy with the final map. I would have liked to add more detail to the kids, but they fill the need. I had fun mapping this, and as hoped, learned some techniques through the process.

I really adore this piece RJ. I am constantly amazed at the level of talent this community attracts, in spite of the enormous barrier to entry (time) required to participate. This is a perfect follow-up to your hip-hop piece and one that has much greater interest. I wouldn't be surprised if someone came looking for you to do some work based on this.

I'm humbled Immolate. You're right about the time factor though - 1 month for a finished map is like lightning speed for me. I guess we do work best under pressure. And honestly, I've had a couple people approach me to make a map, but I'm still waiting for someone who's serious, and is willing to pay, although I don't ask for much money.
