View Full Version : Like so many before me. Hello.

01-14-2011, 01:00 PM
I have infrequently visited this site in the past. Most likely when it was new and just on the net.

Though I used to be very into making fantasy maps for such games as AD&D (My motto used to be... Every town on the Map of Greyhawk had to have a map and a key).

I have always had a huge love of maps of all varieties for RPGs.

Anyhow. I have been out of the RPG thing for quite some time now.
I just recently started playing an Online RPG (Which comes off more like a Round Robin for the moment).
I have designed two modern cities for the game (Called Age of Heroes: A super hero universe).
I am into using Satellite imagry to give it more of a sense of realism.
Though as many of you probably know. This can cause the pixels to come off smudged or blurry (Unless the maps are huge).
SO I am here to see if there are ways I can correct this.
Plus to possibly find new ways of doing gorgeous modern city maps.
Wouldn't mind learning how to design internals for modern buildings as well.

That's it.
Otherwise. Hello again!

JUST ADDED THIS: Which section of this site might someone recommend for someone seeking more modern city or environment related material?

Welcome, I like maps with satellite style and use some NASA imagery for some of this too. What you need to do is to make a map where parts of it are at different resolutions to other parts so that when you zoom into some of the areas then you have more resolution. Trying to have street level res for the whole world does indeed give you a real problem of vast bitmaps. Only Google seem able to manage to deal with it at that scale. So you need to manage multiple levels of detail of the same area and there are several software solutions to manage that for you.

Hiya and welcome! There are satellite/modern political maps sprinkled throughout the Regional/World Mapping section, and you'll also probably be spending a lot of time perusing the Sci-Fi/Modern Mapping section. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)

Thanks guys.
I was curious about something.
I went and thought I posted more about my Metro City post... and it hasn't appeared yet. Do I have to wait for a moderator to approve any further images I place on here? or could it be a case of "I thought I posted it... but maybe didn't?" I know. Probably a silly question.

Moderation isn't required (that I know of. Just keeping up with the mass posts I do would be a full time job.. :) )

To the best of my knowledge, it should show up immediately, so it's probably an "I thought I posted it but maybe I didn't." Goodness knows I've done that a time or two :)

That is exactly what I did guys. I must have thought I posted it. All better now!
Here is a link to my Metro City in case anyone is interested: http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?13127-Metro-City...&p=139921#post139921
