Hello this is my first attempt to create a serious map. This is menat to be a first draft of the map from a fantasy setting called Historia Maris.

Keep in mind that the map is still unfinished lacking both several locations and roads.

I followed RobA excellent Regional Map Tutorial for GIMP (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?1142-Award-Winner-Using-GIMP-to-Create-an-Artistic-Regional-RPG-Map).

You've made the common river-branching errors.
Unless this is a very small scale, i.e. local, map you have rivers doing very improbable things. On a large scale rivers branch like trees, they don't split going downstream, except in a delta where it is no longer going down.

The rivers are looking much better in how they originate and flow. Now they just need to extend all the way to their destination; in a couple of places they stop just short of the river they're merging into or the ocean. I like the size differences between the major rivers and tributaries.

Yes I noticed that just few moment after posting, unfortunalty I was in a hurry when I put the new River layer together.


UPDATE: another small step in fixing the rivers, I took the occasion to redesign a couple of them32667

Thnaks unfortunatly I just noticed that I need to revise some elements of the forest layer :( (and possibly the mountains too).

Plus I need some advice about how to design a swamp/muddy terrain.

Mountains could maybe use a bit of transition to the flatter ground. As for the swamp/muddy terrain, maybe the Everglades as an example?

Check out Google Maps, search for "The Everglades", Florida, and switch to "Satellite" view and you can see how that looks.

There is also Vasyugan Swamp in Siberia that covers an area larger than Switzerland or Pantanal in Brazil. This link has a satellite photo of Pantanal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantanal
