This may be a non-starter, depending on how much time I have, but I thought I'd join in for this one, since it ties in with an idea I've been kicking around for a while.

My entry will be a board game set in an alternate 16th century Italy which is even more fragmented than our world's was, with steampunk and magic. Each player starts out as either the ruler of an Italian nation or a condottierre leader, the goal is to unify Italy!

Viva italia! ... sounds exiting - so are you going with classic hex based war game... or something more like a diplomacy board? ... looking forward to seing the steampunk and magic incorporated :)

It's going to be set up kind of like a Risk or Axis & Allies board, with differently shaped and sized territories. I actually DO want to create an actual boardgame of this, so this Challenge is good motivation. :D

Random thoughts:

-Depending on what you as a player start out as, either a duke or a general, you'll have different starting abilities, which can change and multiply as you gain or lose territory. I thought it'd be a cool idea that, if you lose all your territory, you're allowed a kind of 'saving throw' that lets you convert your few remaining followers into the nucleus of a new army, essentially allowing you to restart as a condottierre, though with much reduced benefits and power. Hmm. Have to ponder that some more.

-Each player will have to draw an Event Card every turn. These will denote things that happen to that player and his territory. It could be something benign like extra crops, allowing you to raise more men for your army in a specific province for one turn, or it could be something awful, like a plague that kills a percentage of your troops. Then there will be Special Event Cards (need to think of a better name). These cards must be purchased (limit of one a turn) unless the Event Card you draw lets you have a free Special Event. The Special Events will be stuff like New Invention (steam dirigibles? :D) which you'll have exclusive use of and monopoly on for a number of turns, after which everyone else can develop them as well. Or stuff like Foreign Alliance - France decides to back your claim, so you get an extra infusion of money each turn... until you happen to draw an Event Card that negates your alliances.

-Players can ally with each other against other players; this works especially well if one is a duke and the other is a general. All kinds of good times can be had with that, I think.

edit: oh, BTW, thanks to whichever mod fixed my thread title. D'oh! :D

Not much to see yet; just blocking out colors and finalizing how I want the land and sea to look.

I always start out with a B&W - that acts as my base, so I can easily add new layers/layer styles with a ready-made template already in place.

Well, borders and cities are in, though they need to be pretty-fied. The solid lines are national borders - what each country starts the game claiming as its provinces, and the dotted lines are provincial borders. Big stars are capitals, giving their provinces added bonuses, small stars are other cities, giving their provinces smaller bonuses.

One more update for tonight. I'm not sure I'm liking the direction this is going, but I'm going to push through and see what it looks like farther on. I figure if it's crap, I've got almost the whole month to start over. :D

So, colored areas are going to be Playable Nations (I think there will be around six). Then there are nations which cannot be players, but can be moved into by the Players, like Piombino. Next are non-movable areas, which will be France, Switzerland, Austria, and the Ottomans. Last are Sea Zones.

What I'm trying to do now is work out a balance that will allow anyone to have a chance at winning; I decided to make the smaller nations NPCs because they're just not going to have enough oomph to start out with. An exception might be Malta - I'm kind of wanting it to be a Templar Magocracy. Even though they start out tiny, they're going to have a kick-ass military to start out.

Then I have to factor in the players that want to be Condottiere - should they start out in another player's territory, allied to them for the first turn? That's kind of what I'm leaning towards.

looking really good - I like the colors (the leather could use a little texturing ;) ) ... and game balance is always hard - In diplomacy Italy often loose (although I have managed to win with Italy) and Austria-Hungary is also in a hard position to begin with, but the game is well balanced.
In Britania the game is definitly best played with exactly 4 players, whereas the 3 and 5 player versions are a little off.

Looks very good. The only thing which seems 'odd' to me is the design of the capital symbols. I can't tell what it is, really, but something doesn't work for my eyes. Btw, independent Styria - blasphemy :o ;) !!!

@Tilt: yeah, I think I'm going to get rid of the large leather box. The more I look at it, it's just distracting and ugly. The pattern I used doesn't really work at a larger size like that.

@Sap: The capitals have a bevel/emboss on them, where the other cities don't; I'll reduce it a bit and see how that looks.

Diamond, you could try to make the bevel/emboss less smooth. Maybe that will change the look.

Gotta ask though what IS the leather box for? perhaps i missed the description in an earlier post?

It's gone now. :D It was going to be a game info box with various descriptions of stuff on it - a key, game info, etc. I opted for a much simpler box though.

I've changed things around to make the game more playable - players can no longer be condottierre, but hire them instead. There can be from 2 to 12 players, each starting in one of the colored nations. This isn't really the 'vision' I had for this game, but since this is the first time I've actually sat down and tried to hammer out a map for it, it's a learning experience. :D

Some work on the border and extra stuff - cards! The card design is by tacticangel on DeviantArt. I have yet to get permission to use it, so I may have to change it. here's the link to the original art: Ardent Airship (http://tacticangel.deviantart.com/art/Ardent-Airship-64556279?q=sort%3Atime+favby%3Aeric-zx&qo=4).

Mantua AND San Marino with coasts?

Now I've seen everything.

Well... it is an alternate history. Plus, I wanted to include those two as nations, but had to make the 'spaces' big enough for game counters to reasonably fit into. So yeah, there's some artistic license taken with the states and their names.

Grrrr... running out of time. I may have to just go with what I've got. I've been stuck trying to work up some semi-realistic game pieces to pepper the board with, and that's not going well at all.
