This month, we're delving back into dungeons!

The challenge is to create a greyscale, top-down dungeon tile, consisting of 15 100px-squares per side (so a 1500x1500 pixel image). Each of the four sides should have a one-square opening in its center (for attachment to other tiles), and solid walls should be solid black. The rest is up to you!

As an added bonus, the folks at ProFantasy Software (www.profantasy.com) have offered to sponsor the challenge with a $40 gift voucher for their site going to the winner!

Every entry should be a new thread in this forum - with a title of the form:
March/April Lite Challenge Entry: <My title>

Each wip image in the thread should be preceded by the tag:
### Latest WIP ###

The challenge will end on April 15th.

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with! Good luck!!

Any particular reason it has to be in grayscale? :?:

It's so we can match them all up at the end and make a mega dungeon! ohh...crumbs...wasn't sure if it was meant to be a surprise.

This sounds fun. And nice prize too :)

Seeing as how the winner gets a free thing and Torstan has that annual set of mtns...I'd enter this if I could. Maybe I'll make a fake name and enter :)

If I see a Bscension in this contests I'm going to be very suspicious *lol*

hehe, maybe a CL can make awards disappear... ;)

Temporary reset? :D You'll all look so naked without your shiny golden compasses...

well, it has been known to happen that an award winner chooses to do the lite challenge without actually entering the competition - as we would like as many maps as possible to make a final huge map - feel free to join in on the sidelines :)

Hmm, just to understand it: one 100px wide opening on each side in the middle and the rest is up to me? Why the reference to 15 100x100px? And what about the thickness of the walls to get a consistent mega dungeon? I'm a bit confused:?:

For clarification, is it safe to assume that we're sticking to the 1 square = 5 feet scale?

1 square (100 x 100 pixels) = 5 feet ...

and yes, we didn't specify the wall thickness - but there is a good reason ... didn't think of it *lol* ... but no matter what we specify we're gonna get a lot different looking things and styles anyhow :) ... so just go for it :)

Yes, 1 square is 5 feet.

For the walls, you can assume any thickness you'd like. So either of these would be fine (where each square would be 100px):

34571 34572

Obviously the interior should be filled with all sorts of dungeon-y goodness.

I think these help a lot. Thanks for clarification. I hope somebody joins me out there soon. It feels empty.

I think I will be joining you Troedel. I wish I had noticed the Lite challenge earlier, all that time lost! I love dungeon tiles and hope I can come up with something nice. I like the concept you are starting with and can't wait to see how your piece turns out.

Question: Should these tiles contain a grid, or be gridless? Hexes?

I had every intention on joining you, but I've been preoccupied with lots of much less important things (stupid WoW!). We shall see, I guess.

throw on a square grid for ease of use :)

torstan

Yep, it should have a square grid to make it easy to see the 15 square by 15 square size.

Question: Requirements states that walls need to be composed of solid black. Am i correct in assuming this means walled-off areas need to be black and only black? Or can the negative space within walled sections be filled with another texture or effect so long as the wall becomes solid black at all boundaries?

Specifically, in regards to this post, http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?14129-March-April-Lite-Challenge-Entry-Watery-Cavern&p=149136&viewfull=1#post149136, do the negative sections of the image (which are currently white) need to be black or can they remain white or have a texture/effect in them?

Thanks!

Solid, any area not playable should just be black. That way when we put them together they "match" :)

Edit: All of the other entries so far are textured, so feel free to texture them ... but make it a dark texture so it's similar.

Thanks Gidde, I will do my best to match as close as possible to the other entries.

Meh, I thinks they be busy at the moment. All in due time I'm guessing :) What I'm hoping for is the announcement of the next lite challenge category, I've got a taste for this artsy competition stuff now!

I think you´re right. It´s nice to have these challenges because you have to explore new things. Learning new things along the way. I like it, too.

Sorry guys. Setting up the voting takes some time and it looks like we're all a bit busy with r/l at the moment.

I'll get the voting up today. This one seems to have fallen between the gaps a little here.
