View Full Version : The World of Hyranden, map by The Red Epic

Here is a world map that i have been working on for myself for a long time. Basically it is the world in which a game i am developing (strategy boardgame) takes place. Its also going to be the centerpiece for my booth at Gen Con in August, so if you are going, look forward to seeing it framed hanging behind me while i ply my wares:) Its pretty big, around 4x3.5 feet, and its as detailed as my sanity would allow! It will also be for sale either as a poster or the framed print. The style is a mix of my own and Diamond's "Dark Empire" map whom i thanked already for inspiring me with some of the best maps i've seen in general. Shout out to my Carto brotha, haha.
*Update! Changed the colors a bit, filled in some spots and took out some rivers:) Also the File is now attached CG!

That looks amazing.. and I'm sure it's even better at larger sizes. Looking forward to seeing it bigger and if I'm lucky in person this August.

Beautiful map. Would love to see this at a bigger scale.
Edit: Doh! Didn't see the link to the bigger version. :s

By Jove he's done it again!
03-23-2011, 02:08 PM
Not sure if it is intended or not, my guess is not as there are many other ones that have been coloured, but there is a set of standing stones beneath the label "Koraan" that have been left as an outline only.

Very pretty indeed.
I notice that there are a lot of improbable rivers. I've spotted one that seems to connect two seas which would require at least one side of that river to be flowing uphill. There are also a lot that fork as they go downstream (which almost never happens). If the 72dpi image is the size the map will be printed at I think you'll need to bump up the point size on the text as it might be a bit tiny for reading on a print out.
Those are small comments on a beautiful piece of work. I love the colour scheme, and the grungy edges. I'm impressed with the realism of the wear you've got there. That's really fantastic.

Torstan needs a 'River Police' Badge!!!!
03-23-2011, 03:36 PM
That's a beauty! Gorgeous.

I'm an amateur compared to some of the river spotters out there, but it would be a shame to see this one printed and displayed without the quick fixes to make the rivers work.

Fantastic map. This one goes in my inspiration folder.

Hey Everyone, thanks so much for the feedback! No those rocks are def supposed to be colored, i must have missed them! and yes tortan i still have much to learn about rivers and i will go about correcting some of them which shouldn't be a problem. Actually this map will be printed about 4 foot by 3.5 feet for GenCon and framed so i think the type should be small but legible:)
I had alot of fun with the shield design and painting, and tried to emulate a sort of 16th century roman map with a fantasy twist, its been fun but punishing, haha.

Beautiful map, but yes:
River violations makes Baby Jesus cry.

Wow. WOW. WOW!!!
That's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I love the subtle coloring, the physical layout of everything, the icons look great, the heraldry is astounding... hell, I could keep going, but yeah, it's awesome. :D

I have amended many of the rivers and the standing stone that was uncolored, let me know if these rivers are more agreeable. I tried to follow how rivers would flow (lazily) via the topographical map based on suggestions and comments from you all, and i think its much better. Let me know if it works! And thank everyone for you comments!

From what I can tell, it looks a lot better. Got a few river splits going to the sea (they join not split, except in deltas). Just left of Nordium and just north of Forohere's Tears and in Lake Iries. Now if those are deltas then, by all means, disregard. The one just left of Orun Oriaan looks perfect. Nonetheless, still just sheer epicness.

Wow, I love all the detail work! Wonderful job!

Excuse me, I have to find my jaw from somewhere on the floor. Absolutely stunning!
03-29-2011, 12:17 PM
Amazing! May I ask - what is original "working size" of this map?
03-29-2011, 09:47 PM
Such a fantastic map :) Good work!
03-31-2011, 12:19 AM
Thanks for the comments everyone! I will be fixing some of the rivers once again and some little details i left out soon.

TheRedEpic, thanks. I try to learn some tricks about great mapping like this : )

That map is gorgeous! I'll definitely be taking some time out at Gen Con to come and take a look at the print version!
04-07-2011, 01:45 PM
jeez. you guys are amazing.
06-28-2012, 01:44 PM
Ok, i am sorry...but i have to necro this thread ;)
Awesome map, Jared! I don't know if there is a history for this world...but if there is, i'd really want to know more about it. Oh and any chance of you uploading an even higher res of this? I have an idea for a short rpg campaign in a medieval world and this map looks so ... inviting!
Oh and have some rep.!

This is very possibly the most beautiful map I have ever seen, on this site or anywhere. It's ASTOUNDINGLY GOOD. 12 stars out of 10.

What a beautiful map! I love the shields, they add so much character to the map. The subtle colours are great too. All your works are awesome, but this one is one of my favorites! :D
07-02-2012, 02:30 PM
Certainly something for us newbies to aspire to. Well done! Fantastic use of color. I really like the sophisticated look of the brick red on the tans, yellows, and browns. Provides perfect contrast and allows the greens of the trees and the blues of the water to stand out.

Thanks for all the comments, i'm a fan of how this map came out too, its just so satisfying working on personal work and having people appreciate that too:)
P.S- Hey everyone, my Kickstarter project is up! Please check it out and pledge so i can get this book out :) Thanks!
07-03-2012, 04:43 PM
Another fantastic map, I love the coat of arms at the bottom of the map.
07-03-2012, 06:51 PM
Amazing style. I love the line work along the oceans as well as the heraldry along the bottom.
07-04-2012, 04:35 AM
This map is a real delight for the eye. Great job ! It's magnificient.
07-06-2012, 10:55 PM
Thanks for the comments guys, they mean alot!
Btw, PLEASE check out my Kickstarter project! Its a 40 page sketchbook i'm putting out full of characters, monsters and soldiers from both science fiction and fantasy. Many of the Races of Hyranden (The map on this post) are in it:)
Here are a few images from it:
Check it out, thanks!

Hi. Did you design the shields in the bottom of the map?
07-17-2012, 03:14 PM
Yes i designed and painted everything on this map, including all the heraldry. I love heraldry and shield design, and i always love when its incorporated into a map, so i decided to include the faction shields into this one. I'm not a fan of hard and fast boundaries, especially in a medieval world since they often shifted do to loyalty of the lords, treaties, and warfare. Glad you all enjoy this map, hopefully it gets featured, that would be pretty cool:)

I realy love your decoration elements on your maps. Are they Vector graphics?
01-26-2013, 11:28 AM
It seems that I never commented on this one... Shame on me... How is that possible?!
This is THE map I love the most. So detailed, very nice color palette, shields and icons, I love every thing. I always loose myself into it when I see it... trying to catch one detail or another.

Loosing yourself on a map? Not really the purpose of a map :D
01-26-2013, 11:56 AM
Yes indeed :d That's what happens when the work is so full of magic mastery!
