Taking a more abstract approach. So far I have the base land map. The outline is actually the northern tip of a real country, but I'm only using that for reference. I'm just creating this as I go, with no real end vision. I have a feeling the river police may nab me, as I really don't truly understand the flow of rivers. But I added some anyway. So.... here we go!

(edit) Here's my reference map. Changed it a lot actually. I just needed a starting point and liked the shape. It's Malta.

Rivers seems fine but the one coast-hugger is questionable. Some hills there fixes that, though. Dig your style, man.

Nice. Green sea seems to work somehow... got a bit of a RISK feel to it.

Nice. Green sea seems to work somehow... got a bit of a RISK feel to it. I guess since my experience is with risk style maps, it must rub off in my work. Lot of entries this month, should be good!

not much of an update, but added some roadways, and started work on some cityscapes. Not sure I'll keep this... but might as well show.

That font looks excellent with those colors. One thing you might consider is moving the name 'Saint Paul's Bay' into the actual bay instead of on the land next to it. It kind of creates the illusion of the land and sea being reversed the way it is now.

I see what you mean - I'll work on that a bit. With the vibrant green sea, it doesn't jump out as water.

Still playing with this one.

You could change the font color of the 'water' names to white; that might help them stand out against the dark water. Maybe lower the opacity to 50% or something to avoid blinding white text.

D said exactly what I was going to say but I was going to suggest a tan or light yellow color. I think he's been eating my brain.

a bit more work tonight while wife watched celebrity apprentice. Reality shows are rampant in the U.S. - this one staring Donald Trump.
anyway, worked on some labels and coloring. I think I like how this feels. Thanks for the feedback so far.

forgot to move saint pauls bay, but i will. lot more labels and cities and stuff to add also.

Looking real good, RJ.

Thanks D.

Added some funky shaped forest around that center hot spot. it will eventually contain a city

Looking very nice RJ, although with the tapering I wasn't quite sure whether I was looking at roads or rivers... I love the look though: printed on board and stuck in an attic for the last 4 decades.

good point about the roads. I used an artistic brush stroke in Illustrator for the roads, which tapers at the ends. Also I used a round brush set to fade in Photoshop for the rivers. So yeah, they both taper at the ends. I think at this point I like the looks, so i may do some labeling or color/stroke adjustments to them to differentiate a bit more.

Thanks Tigon

Looking really nice RJB. That terracotta colour (which I really like) is becoming a signature colour for your work!

Not sure but I think you're looking for "Dieu est mon droit." God is my right.... Awesome color scheme as always RJ.

Added a few more labels - I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to do much more with this map. It's sort of a strange assortment of names. I would have liked to spent time on the hidden city in the center of the forest, but we'll just have to keep it a mystery.

Am I imagining things, or do all your labels tilt to the left now? Not that that's a bad thing, I was just wondering what the reasoning behind that was...

RjBeals

good call Diamond. the large labels are titled -3 degrees, while the smaller labels are tilted -4 degrees.
Just felt like doing it, since I had North on the compass tilted a bit. Didn't think anyone would actually pick up on that.

Looks great. The label tilt is a neat effect. I actually thought I was tilting my head instead. :)

I think the tilt effect is quite effective and adds a bit of extra interest. Good job.

I couldn't figure out how to change the "untilted" thread title to "Molta"

Steel General

Title changed per above 'request'.

@RjBeals - Not sure if a regular user can do this or not, but it is in the "Administrative" drop-down menu, select "Edit Thread"

Another great piece! I really like this, besides the clean & crips borders and labels (which is what the challenge is about) , your pick of color-palette is spot-on again. cheers, DJ
