This month's challenge is to create a planetary survey. This might be our efforts to survey Gliese 581d (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_581_d) for future colonisation or it could be aliens surveying earth for ley lines, or even a map of spelljammer landing points on an asteroid hurtling towards a planet.

This month is about thinking big. Consider the information you'd want to show about a whole planet and how you could display that cleanly. Remember, your showing information about the planet, but the type of information and the style it's displayed tells us a lot about the surveyors too.

This challenge will end on the 15th of June. The winner will get a shiny silver compass, and a $40 store voucher from Profantasy (http://www.profantasy.com/)

Cool! Hopefully I can get something in, but I'm not sure. Is the challenge just basically mapping a whole planet, or are there some other implications?

@Ares96 - Here's an example I did a while ago for a similar challenge... Click Me (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?3341-November-Entry-Galactic-Planetary-Directory-Khuutath)

Final version on Pg. 4 of the thread. Maybe it will give you some inspiration.

Looks like Captain Carol Mayer and the Nebraska might make a appearance.... :)

Is this supposed to be sticky? It seems to slide down the list. For a moment I thought Torstan was trying to pull a fast one and had entered the light Challenge himself :)

I went and stickied it. Hadn't noticed. Thanks, Jax.

I still haven't come up with a unique an awesome concept yet but have been testing and practicing making a planet and produced this one of planet Earth. (Using this tutorial for GIMP (http://mygimptutorial.com/the-ultimate-gimp-planet-tutorial))

Hopefully this is helpful for anyone.

I used that tut too geamon. I just couldn't get the script to run so I had to make the planet base myself.

It's interesting how everyone has gone 'SF' on this challenge (which is the natural thought). No steampunk, no fantasy (refreshing!) although it would be hard to see how you could do a fantasy planetary survey unless... it was some planet as seen through the crystal ball of a wizard or such like.

You realize of course what you've done..... :)

Hmm, I have a bit of an idea. Though I don't know if I can pull it off. It is VERY different from the "picture of a planet with some info boxes" entries we've had so far. I'll do a bit of digging and experimenting and post it if it looks likely to work.

If anyone wants a hint, one of my recent posts relates to it.

I had an interesting idea, although time is now short, and I'm not sure if I'm capable of pulling it off. I'll have to do a bit of experimentation and see if it's doable.

Any ideas why it won't let me upload my initial WIP? It just sits there and pretends its doing something...

I agree; I'm going to have a hard time choosing between this month's excellent entries! Hopefully someone will post the poll and the new challenge soon.
