This was an idea that came to me tonight. It also turned into a experiment in creating things myself. All the elements except for the ground texture were created by me. :)

I like it, but my one "issue" is that the tree pattern is noticeably repeated.

I see what you mean. I need to draw a few more kinds of trees :)

Yeah, it might not be a repeated pattern but they're all the same size and shape. Pretty cool, though. I'd see me using this.

looks very nice.. got 2 little comments: the trees look rather large in comparison to the ruins. In addition to the comments above, try throwing a (or more) colored cloud layer (or the gimp equivalent) over the trees to tint them differently.

I agree about the repitition. But I love the way you have made the treed sections seem to have different heights!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. :) I decided to start this over with a bit more detail. I added towers to the ruins and am currently working on making some new tree brushes. :)

I decided that since I was starting this over, it would make sense to work on some details. I always enjoy encounter maps that are very detailed with lots of "bits and bobs" that help make the scene. I started work on that principle here. I also made everything bigger to get the scale a bit better. :)

And here is the "Original" version of this with some color variation on the trees. :)

I finally settled on some trees that I liked. I had originally layered the castle ruins and moved them a click or two over on each layer for a sense of depth but decided that I didn't really like the effect and went with a simple shading instead. All in all I like how this turned out. I think a encounter map of the floor plan of the main house may be next.... :)

Trees suburb! everything else, but MOST especially the ruins texture are way to blurry for the sharpness of the trees. I would suggest different textures for the keep ruins.

A quick reality check: That house is only around 150 square feet on the ground floor. By way of comparison, my one bedroom apartment is about 690 square feet. (Living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom.) Each of the towers is less than 10 feet in diameter, which is manageable, but quite small even so.

Very nice! I like the new direction you went with the trees. I might snag this to use for a game sometime if that is allright with you :D

I do agree that the textures in the building stand out because they are so blurry compared to the ground, water, and trees. A sharper texture would make the image appear more whole.

Maybe it was built by a smaller-than-human species.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I hadn't realized how blurry the objects were. I blurred them in the hopes of making the image "softer" but it didn't really turn out that way. I went back and fixed all the objects I hope they are better. As for the scale what can I say? I am HORRIBLE at scale. I don't know why I get the 1 Square= 5 Feet thing stuck in my head and next thing you know.. POOF...there it is even when I had NO intention of making it THAT small. :) Any way I fixed that as well. And Wannabehero your welcome to use this if you wish. :)

After some more thought and a good hard look at this I realized It just wasn't very good. I went back and remade all of the elements and made everything much bigger. I realized that I had too much forest and not enough encounter. The title says "Forest Ruins" after all not "A small under-scaled castle in the middle of a giant otherwise unremarkable forest" :). So I present the "Forest Ruins" version 3 :)

I like this much better, you got rid of the heavy stroke on the walls, etc. :)

You might want to redo the turrets without the heavy stroke since everything else doesn't have it.
