decided to finally do one of these. initial planning:

i'm thinking of it as a sort of cavernous nether world, past the endless stone walls at the edge of the world.

Neat idea! ... and very inspiring. I'm interested to see what you do with it.

Looks like a really neat idea, looking forward to seeing your updates.

Thanks guys.

Put in some hours today on the water elements.
The caverns are located at the northern most point of the world - the land below the great northern wall of the world is glacial and fractures off into the sea. The rivers you see running out of the caves do not carry water but a condensed energy known as Misya. It is present in very small percentages in all water supplies but is highly poisonous if undiluted.

Today I began on the caverns, adding offshoots and tunnels.

going to continue doing that, plus laying down the points of interest.

Cool concept and awesome execution. I like!

Went and added a few more extraneous cave complexes - carved by sentients and beasts alike. Also added a scratchy patina and toyed with the colors. Next to add markers to points of interest and labels.

Interesting idea for a map, and well executed to boot! Great job so far Vman!

Trying to decide how to handle labeling. Here are a few options im considering.

1. Handwritten
2. Telegraphem
3. Remington Noisless
4. Orator Std
5. Dakota
6. Book Antiqua

hmm. I kinda like the Telegraphem. Fits the style, easy to read. That's just me. =)

What do you call that background? To me it looks like a tinted glass plate over concrete... nice looking.

Its a texture from over on deviantart.com - i believe its a high res scan of an old photo backing with an overlayed darker scratch texture.

Put in a ton of labels, notations, etc.

Added some flavor text into the negative spaces, probably going to bury them a bit so that they arent so crisp but i thought i'd show them like this so that everyone would have a chance to read them all...

Sweet! The mix of fonts looks good, but I hope you won't bury them too far. Is that supposed to say 'shadowmen' instead of 'hadowmen' ? It's looking amazing.

yep - typo. picked it out right after i posted :P

Well, my hard drive crashed...

On the bright side i got my computer in to the mac store the day before my warranty ran out (whew!) and i had most everything backed up.

Unfortunately I lost the .PSD file for this map so theres not too much more I can do to it, I guess this is the final WIP.

Im pretty happy with it, it was good practice.

Looks like something out of Fallout or some post apocalyptic setting.

This is excellent vman; tragedy about the hard drive crash.

I love the little tunnels and heddars... is it a real language you've used to name these places? If it's one you've made up, you've executed it very well.

The language was made up for the piece - I think the meaning behind most of the words should be pretty easy to decipher. Im a big fan of post-apocalyptic and dark fantasy; I was going for a lovecraft-esque feel here.
