I use Paint.net mostly because it's extremely adaptable and I have an immense amount of experience using it's very neat and well-done features, I have many add-ons already but they're mainly for enhancing regular pictures et cetera. I'm wanting to know what add-ons would be good for Borders, Coastlines, and maybe link a tutorial on how to make mountain ranges? I can probably translate photoshop or GIMP work into Paint.NET tools easily.

JehZiro, for mountains, it depends on the style... something "hand" drawn can be done fairly easily in most software. When it comes to filters, some things translate, some don't depending on the software used.. but in most cases you can get close if you find the right filters and play around. I know there area few PDN people here, but I don't recall seeing them recently, so they may not be really active...
Soo... what type of mountains are you looking to create and we can go from there.... borders are... borders.... so should be doable.. for coastlines, you can likely replicate most stuff, you just have to translate the tool names into PDN terms and do a bit of playing... Wish I could help more....

Perhaps it be best if you can link to a few styles you are looking to immitate... even with overhead views, there are quite a number of styles, some easier than others to deal with. If I recall correctly, PDN does not have anything like the Bump Map(though it might be somewhat fakeable with emboss or something like that), so that might leave some tutorials out from the get go...

For example, here (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?15286-Some-maps-for-Zeitgeist) is a hand drawn style of overhead mountains see the second and third images. Those you could do with just about any tool since it's mostly the artist at work. RobA's regional map tutorial for GIMP (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?1142-Award-Winner-Using-GIMP-to-Create-an-Artistic-Regional-RPG-Map) uses GIMP's bump map and render clouds features quite a bit, so if PDN has anything similar, you might be able to follow along with that. Or Ascension has several that begin with Photoshop in mind... here (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?4084-Award-Winner-My-atlas-style-in-PS)

There are also a few PDN tutorials in the Tutorials forum, just go the the advanced search and put in "Paint.Net" in the keywords and limit it to the tutorial forum.
