Hello, everybody. I've been doing FRPG maps with MS Paint for several years (and hand-drawn ones since I was a wee lad). Just getting involved in a collaborative module creation project over at Myth-Weavers, and trying to elevate my technical skills (and master a better mapping software).

Since I'm currently on a limited budget, I'm definitely interested in hearing people's opinions on what the best free mapping software is--with an optimal mix of user-friendliness, capabilities, and professional-looking product.

Welcome Aboard!

Can't go wrong with GIMP (if you want a graphics program more than just mapping software), it's free and can do most things Photoshop can do. Lots of folks here use it.

The Campaign Cartographer, City Designer, Dungeon Designer series by Pro-Fantasy are also very popular.
