View Full Version : [Unpaid] Ruin Regions' Planet Maps

I've spent a few months lurking around these forums, always impressed with the quality of work and the general positive atmosphere and it's about time for me to make my own request and see if anyone is interested.

Ruin Regions is an MMORTS game that I've been developing in several different forms, primarily by myself, for the last either months. With the amount of time I've spend on the project already, in conceptualizing and creating a foundation to build off of, I've come to a point where I'd like to try and turn some of these concepts into graphics. In Ruin Regions, game play is based around four planets that are distinctively different in environment and the people that inhabit them. What I would like to have done is a detailed map of all four planets.

Now here is where it may get a little more interesting to the potential artist. These four planets, although they are technically "in the future" (based on the story of Ruin), they are the theoretical landscape and environment of what the four inner planets of our solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) would have been during a habitable period in their history. After doing a good amount of digging on different photographs and scans of these planets, I have pieced together a rough outline of what each planet would look like, geographically. I will post these up shortly!

If you have more questions about this VERY brief introduction to Ruin Regions, please let me know, or feel free to visit our blog, http://ruinregions.blogspot.com/ and browse around. But here's the rest of the important information.

Time Constraints

Considering that I would like four individual maps, there is no pressing time constraints. The sooner the better, but of course I understand that this is not currently a paid project.

Style

Since I'm not too sure how to describe the style I'm looking for, I hope that these two examples of what I'm looking for do the job. Besides, not to be cliche, but a picture is worth a thousand words?

Description of Map

Here's a brief description of each of the planet's environments and landscapes.

COM-MECHA (Mercury)
"THE INDUSTRIAL PLANET"
Com-Mecha, by far the most volatile planet in Ruin, also boasts the largest and most easily accessible Mineral deposits, making it one of the richest resourced planets. The seven known mainlands of Com-Mecha are all surrounded with active magma and fierce native wildlife that has adapted to the inhospitable environment. All known land masses on Com-Mecha have been caused by the erupting volcanoes hardened magma over the course of thousands of years. The two largest islands on the planet, which are still growing, are home to the only active volcanoes remaining on Com-Mecha. Due to it's extremely high temperature and environment, the planet lacks a large Water supply making it vegetation and Timber also scarce. Although the planet lacks Water, Com-Mecha's wildlife is surprisingly flourishing, as they have adapted over the years to their environment.

KALA (Venus)
"THE REVIVAL PLANET"
The appearance of Kala has a strong resemblance to Earth, with the only distinct difference being in the geography. Kala is the only planet in Ruin that could sustain human life completely and without assistance and because of that the planet was titled "The Revival Planet". Although all natural resources are available on Kala, the wildlife has made the planet a difficult place to build. The wildlife of Kala resemble the size and aggressiveness of Earth's extinct dinosaurs during the Jurrasic period. These creatures have begun aggressively hunting humans even though they do not eat their kills. Due to their massive size and fierce nature, only a handful of these creatures have successfully been hunted for Food.

AGRUAL (Earth)
"THE GREEN PLANET"
Agrual's terrain is dominated by lush forests and jungles and surrounded by the vast swamplands that engulf the main continent of the planet. This natural vegetation has allowed the planet to sustain far more native wildlife than any of the other planet in Ruin. Agrual has little volcanic activity and natural rock formations, making Mineral production difficult. Despite the planet's vast greenery, Agrual lacks large clean water supplies, as the bulk of the water is in the swamp lands and undrinkable. Agrual received the title "The Green Planet" because when originally viewed from space, the planet appeared to be emitting a deep green glow.

BAROON (Mars)
"THE ICE PLANET"
Covered by about 60% of densely packed ice; Baroon holds the largest clean water supply in Ruin. Between the two large polar ice caps sits the only habitable land on Baroon. This land consists primarily of a rough frozen tundra, littered with massive dormant volcanoes. These volcanoes are some of the only safety from the brutal winds and ice tornadoes that frequent the planet. Although highly saturated by water, the freezing temperatures make the land difficult for agricultural growth. While there are many large Mineral deposits at the base of Baroon's volcanoes, these deposits are difficult to reach because of their depth underground. Baroon has been labeled as "The Ice Planet" because of it's massive polar ice caps.

I do have rough sketches of each planet as well, they will be posted up shortly.

Ownership

Since you are the artist and I appreciate your time and work, I wouldn't want to take any credit for your personal art. All I ask is that it's allowed to be displayed as part of Ruin Regions. I'd love to promote the artist that completes or contributes to this project, if the artist would like that, on the Ruin Regions blog, eventual website and in-game credits as well. If there are any issues with this set up, I'm more than willing to discuss other possibilities.

I feel like I've left a lot out and I probably have, so if there are ANY questions that you'd like to have clarified, please ask me! I'll be checking back here frequently, but feel free to contact me at James@ruinregionsdotnet (dot = ".")

Thanks for reading and considering my project! :D

you should really think about buying Fractal Terrains from Profantasy. It will automatically generate planets for you very much in the style you've shown. You can play with various settings and easily make ice planets, foresty looking planets etc.

And get wilbur too. You don't have to be an artist to get those. Just be a little intuitive and mess around.

Thanks for the recommendation and resource Ravells. Fractal Terrains looks like a very user-friendly and easy to learn tool for developing exactly what I'm looking for. That site has a handful of other useful programs that I'll continue to look into as well. And as Evile Eagle said, even with my non-artistic ability I should be able to pull it off. I'm not sure what "wilbur" is though?

While I may resort to using this program in the future, my hope is that someone may be interested in working on this project before I do resort to developing it myself since I am currently programming Ruin Regions alone and I'm artistically challenged. If someone does find this project/request interesting, I hope the "Unpaid" status does not deter you too much and if it does, please let me know and we could discuss this issue in more detail.

I'll offer my standard suggestions on the topics of Fractal Terrains and Wilbur:

http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton/CGTutorial/index.html
http://www.ridgenet.net/~jslayton/software.html and go to the "Main Program Download" link. The Fun With Wilbur links are useful.

And never overlook the message tags option under advanced search here on this forum. The tags "Wilbur" and "Fractal Terrains" will both yield a wealth of information on their respective subjects.

Sorry for the thread jack... but is there any chance at all that you might compile a Linux version of wilbur(or let some else compile?) Of course, this is assuming that you are using C++ and are not including any direct windows library calls that can't be ported... I know you have said on your page that it's windows only for now... but was hoping you might change your mind at some point....

Making Wilbur work on not-Windows requires a complete rewrite of the UI. Making Wilbur work on Wine is likely a less painful proposition.

We are still looking for someone who is interested in working on these maps for Ruin Regions. If you are interested please get a hold of me and I'll send you the layouts of each planet that I had originally planned on posting on this thread.

Thanks,
James
