View Full Version : Bellows

Hey there,

This was done as a commission for Empyrean Games for their upcoming RPG - Clockwork Soul. You may remember the WIP thread a long time ago. http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?12251-Bellows

Well this one was a real bitch. Shane at Empyrean was great about it but I basically gave up on ever completing this map. Doing an overland map is one thing and doing a city map is another. But doing the inside of a mechanical city with all its workings exposed is an order of magnitude removed and I struggled with both confidence and ability.

After my recent break from mapping where I concentrated more on painting I finally felt able to try and tackle this beast once again. And here is the result:

This is one of the cities from Empyrean's world of Mechanol. It is a sentient clockwork being and along with a bunch of other cities makes its slow way around the continent taking what it needs from the ground and carrying its occupants on its back and in its belly.

EDIT: Added some background info.

Thanks a lot guys, appreciate the words. I like how the map turned out but man alive, this is very much a love/hate thing for me.

By the way, I added a little info in the original post.

Love it, Ramah!

Wow Ramah, that is intricate. So much details in all those mechanics. I can totally see why you love/hated it. I find that I get to those points myself on just an overland map at some point in the process, I can only imagine.

Great work, this is amazing.

It really shows in the finished product that you pushed yourself. Absolutely stunning work!

Yeah it looks awesome. I dont think I would have known where to start with something like that.

Parts of this look more like diagraming than mapmaking, so I can understand any frustration. But you definitely hit the mark. Nice work!

I'm just gobsmacked. It's incredible....almost Da Vinci-esque. Superb work Ramah!!! Rep if I'm able to.

Oof, wonderful. Like everyone else has said. And I agree, it must have been quite a pain to do all those bits and bobs!

The thing is, the map is really good. But in addition, we have a wonderful choice of colors, a nice steampunk style and really good effects making it... I can't find words. A perfect drawing.

The idea of a moving city is great. Being on a mechanical walking frame is a wonderful idea. Well Done!
