Here is a list of sites which has free to use real world data - but please check the site itself to make sure you are aware of all conditions of use and whether it's still free:

Blank Map (http://english.freemap.jp/blankmap/)- Has world, continent and country maps in EPS, PDF, GIF and PNG formats. A real treasure trove.

Dmaps.com (http://d-maps.com/)- Lots of maps but all in .gif format (no vector so far as I can see)

Education Place (http://www.eduplace.com/ss/maps/)- Lots of continental blank maps and some US historical blank maps too.

Diva (http://www.diva-gis.org/gData) - GIS data sets, under a CC licence.

Natural Earth Data (http://www.naturalearthdata.com/) - GIS datasets and some raster shaded relief.

Shoreline Coastline database (http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/shorelines/shorelines.html)- GIS database

Maps for Free (http://www.maps-for-free.com/) - Based on Google Earth

I would also recommend OpenStreetMap (http://extract.bbbike.org/) Data that you can download and you can specify the extent of the area for data extraction. Vector data available in many file format.
