Everything begins with and idea and a quick doodle ... a rustic compass rose made from logs and rope.
(this time there will be at least one entry for sure ... and an embarrasing one if I forget to update this WIP.) :)

Interesting idea, looking forward to see where you go with it.

Modeled some different proportions over lunch ...

I think that I am leaning towards the heavy logs.

Neat. Each one has a different feel to it. The thinnest one reminds me of a dream catcher. Mystical native American style compass would be pretty cool. Heaviest one says logging camp to me. Middle one I'm not sure on. Seems a bit nautical. I never realized that something as simple as thickness says so much. Very cool.

I love 3d. Although, it looks like you rendered this in a top down orthographical view. Try a top down perspective view to give it some depth. The shadows betray a little of the 3d, but the lack of perspective hurts that feeling a little.

I agree.
I tried a top-down perspective first, like this ...

But the 'perspective' didn't really show up too well and made adding the weighted lines much harder.
I also thought about displaying it as a real two-point perspective, like this ...

41848

but I had trouble imagining the map where that would work.
Thanks for the feedback.

Can I get some feedback on COLOR

41791

vs GREYSCALE

41793

from someone who can see colors?
(I was once told that the color I had selected for a presentation "makes my eyes bleed" ).

So, which looks better?

I like the color, but think it is a little pale. Just making it 33% darker seems to make it stand out better.

I actually really liked the look of the top down 3d perspective view. Much more convincing. Also agree on the make it darker approach.

Just for the record (not that it is likely to matter), but all artwork in this thread is offered as "Creative Commons - Non Commercial". Use it any way you like (credit me or don't - it makes no difference for a compass rose) except do not sell it! [as if ;) ]
