View Full Version : March Challenge Entry - The Principality of Altamira

03-10-2012, 05:19 PM
Altamira is a mid-sized polity that, by virtue of its location, has become a trading hub. It sits at the juncture of two large seas and controls all trade between them, as well as influencing most overland trade to the south. Altamira has a long and rich history; centuries of feuding with its larger neighbors and playing one against the other have led to a political atmosphere of byzantine complexity. The Princes of Altamira can trace their lineage back, unbroken, almost 800 years to the fall of the Taleran Empire.

Besides its mighty Trade Houses and ports, Altamira is rich in natural resources. From the silver and iron of its mountains, to the sheep and goat farmers of the highland valleys, to the farmlands of the south and the fishing fleets of three seas, the nation's wealth and security are the envy of its neighbors.

In recent years, ties between Altamira and Cardez, its ancient rival to the north, have become closer. There is even talk of a Union of Houses afoot. Such a Union would likely destabilize the entire balance of power in the region, something that the Sularium, the Church of the Sun, is actively opposed to. There are rumors afoot of an Alliance being formed by the Arch-Prelate to defeat any union of Altamira and Cardez...

An update. The mountain brushes are by a DeviantArt member named pickebu. Not sure if I'll stay with them; I may draw my own this time around. They're just placeholders for now.

And one more update for tonight.

I outlined the names of the duchies within the nation to make them stand out a bit more, but I'm not sure it works...

Phantastic, Diamond. The map looks like directly from a nice Fantasy-Novel

Well, I've been up all night, might as well post another update. I drew in all the mountains - thoughts?

This is a wonderful map. The only visual nit to my eyes is the speckle of the water gets a bit dense in areas such as Lake Senarra. Also around a small island of the northwest with a tower on it. And that's just a small thing, great map!

The streets and the mountains are "cold" Black, the rest is "warm" Black, you should change it to one colortemperature for a unify look. The mountains are MUCH better now. Looking great. Any chance changing some Mountains? I give you 2 Mountains for one of yours, I still have some hundreds in store :D

The NEW mountains are much better! I'm not to keen on the density of the "over-spray effect" on the inland rivers and lakes. It is fine on the seas. Great start though. Interesting Effect over all !

@SK: The mountains aren't set as brushes; I drew each one individually. I've been meaning to get around to doing a brush set in 'my' style, but every time I sit down to do a map I just say, 'screw it, I'll draw them all again'. :D

@lostatsea: Thanks!
I'm not completely sold on the interior waterway stipple either; more experimentation to come.

I'm not sold on the interior stipples at all, but the map is coming along great anyway. c:

Anyway, i am really impressed by this great map, Mr. D

Bye the way, Mr. D, I think you scared your competition to death already. Ha.

I try to find the time to battle with you here.

03-13-2012, 08:03 PM
Hehe, time to try my hand at this soon too. Nice job Diamond!

03-16-2012, 12:47 AM
Okay, here's three different versions, one with stipples in the water only, one with stipples on the land only, and one with both land/water stipple, but removed from around rivers and in interior bodies of water (in other words, left only around shorelines).

(Don't know if the thumb scraper is going to get messed up by three attachments, but...)

Either water or land works for me. Not both though.

Nice map, Diamond. :)

03-17-2012, 06:28 PM
Yeah, I think the middle one looks best. (just the land stipple) I don't really like the stipple on both though.

Great stuff.

Nice map! And I also vote for the wasser-schtippel if there's still time :)

That's a stunner, Diamond. I love the mountains. The composition rocks too.

Wow D, this looks great! The mountains and choice of fonts are very nice.
