The City of the Hole, in glorious b/w .png :)

I'm guessing two more evenings of work should see it done. ^^

Absolutely stunning! How do you work out the perspective?

03-26-2012, 07:20 AM
I'm using a single point bird's eye perspective (plus faking it a bit here and there to make it "work" better as an illustration), but the pencil lines can't be seen in the b/w version of the scan. Otherwise, the thing is littered with perspective lines.

This is a "trip" to look at. Quite a diferent take on the B/W map ideas so far. I look forward to seeing this one finished.

Who should be eating who's brain exactly?

Crazy good work. I fear I have lost... resoundingly. :D

I just have to ask ... should the submitted image be just 2-tone, or can there be a bit of anti-aliasing?

03-27-2012, 03:51 PM
This month the subject matter is unconstrained but you must create a map using only black and white - no colour, and shades of grey are only allowed through anti-aliasing for black lines.

The challenge will close on the 28th of March, with 3 days of voting before the end of the month.

Good to see something out of the box!! :) Better hurry though. Great so far !! I LOVE different .;)

wow, love the concept! and it looks awesome as well! cheers, DJ

Antialiasing is allowed :) But that's all.

03-27-2012, 06:07 PM
Yeah, that's looking amazing.

Hey, lostatsea, I think I've still got 3 days. That's a whole sea of time ... I just skip one night's worth of sleep ;)

But back to the WIP:

I'm trying out a different light/dark balance in this WIP. As you can see the city is pretty much finished. About 8 buildings left in the main city, the bit of western wall to finish, the Sunrise Twin Mountain above the Pit, the river beyond the western wall ... then to add a few labels and maybe some detail bitbobs ... and *then*, if I still have time (probably not) ... scan it at 1200 dpi, digitally clean it up and add all the people! Ok, that last was a joke.

03-27-2012, 07:02 PM
Last Time I checked Today is the 27th and you got till then end of the 28th. LOVE IT!!! Best hurry and leave out the people you don't have time :P

03-27-2012, 07:13 PM
OH by the way if you don't finish I'll still vote for your Coffee picture because that is what the Thumbnail scrubber pick out of your last post !!:P:P:P

03-27-2012, 09:01 PM
Doesn't anybody sleep here? I like your coffee fueled latest wip best. Nice fisheye/handrawn work. I'm not sure if I've seen the like. Time to go trawl the gallery.

03-28-2012, 03:12 AM
Oh my! I was sure I had until the 31st of March! :D

LOL! :)

Well, I've still got 15 hours.

03-28-2012, 09:10 AM
You can do it! (in my horrible Rob Schneider impersonation)

03-28-2012, 01:07 PM

There we go! Finished and 3 hours to go. And 0 anti-aliasing*. There was a simpler trick ... just increase the size of the final file and let the browser anti-alias it when it's not at full-view!

Rudvik - City of the Pit, built on the site of a long abandoned giantish mine beneath the Sunrise Twin mountain, the lower of the two Twins, in the high valley of the White River. All the buildings you see are the result of a rare metal boom in the region following settlement by the Vale Folk from the Easting who fled the evul Centaur Khans following the fall of the Eternal Empire of Goldmouth (actually lasted about 400 years).

For the D&D afficionados: a very lawful place with a strong militia, combining dwarves and humans bent on extracting ores while beating surrounding natives (wildlings) and fauna (monsters) into pulp to allow for the faster extraction of minerals and accumulation of wealth (capital). Ruled by a "Chief" who heads a city council elected by the most important (richest) local "nobles" (determined by income) and under the overlordship of the Good Baron of Gomilsk who is the nominal owner of all local lands (pocketing a percentage of all wealth extracted from the lands - be it from mining or adventuring). Adventuring without a "license" that costs 1 gold emperor per month (or the individual adventurer can purchase a 6 g.e. annual "grand license") is a no-no and gets your PC put in stocks, fined and publicly humiliated. :)

*anti-aliasing is for pussies. Meow.

An awesome idea executed wonderfully!

This is so great... what more to say.
A mindblowing concept and good execution.
Hope they don't get flooded too often :D
