View Full Version : *** April Challenge - Cinematic Fight Scene ***

What fun is a fight in a 10' square stone room with 2 doors? Climactic battle scenes take place across memorable terrain - from the classic collapsing cave ceiling and rivers of lava, to the opening chase scene in Casino Royale across swinging cranes. A great environment paces the combat, gives the protagonists options other than 'I stand there and hit him with my axe' and adds real peril to the encounter.

This month, make the terrain a third combatant. Create a map for a climactic encounter. Think epic. Think over the top. Remember, in Die Hard Bruce Willis wrestles a fighter jet to the ground - few things are too extreme for a climactic movie battle.

If you have the option to do so, adding the option of a 100px or 50px square grid for 5' squares will make your entry more useful for rpg gameplay - however this is not a necessary requirement.

Please follow the normal rules for challenge submissions:

To submit an entry, please create a new thread titled April Challenge Entry - <entry name>
Before each entry, add the tag ### Latest WIP ###
Use the attachment managed to upload any WIPs
The challenge will end on the 28th of April.

Check in here for the list of WIP thumbnails for the challenge as it progresses:

Good luck and let the boldest hero stride through rivers of boiling blood to claim the crown!

Yeah, that is the hard part, getting started! But I do like this challenge!

This is right off my alley ... damn. Usually my cinematic scenes include notes such as, "ask players what other objects they notice." :S

"You see dirt, stone, dirt, stone, and more dirt and stone. What the heck did you expect? You're in the bowels of the earth...."

NOOO, not the bowels!! I see dirt, stone, dirt, stone....is that guano? Oh noooo, we must be in the bowels of the earth...unless someone has a really bad diet and we've been 'et.

If I can think of something worthwhile I might attempt this.

Can anyone enter this, or do you first have to have won a lite challenge or have posted a minimum number of posts? If I'm allowed to enter, I'd quite like to attempt a dynamic (ie changing) gladiatorial fight scene in a Colosseum, starting out just sand and then filling up with water, until some boats come in. Maybe have a mad elephant. Could be a bit difficult since I can't ever do water right.

Absolutely. There is no condition for entry. This would be a great place to try out different water techniques and get lots of feedback.

As always the more the merrier with these things.

Can someone enter more than once? I have two ideas... and am *this* close to just doing them both. :)

You can always make as many maps as you want, but only one thread and only one map entry will be able to voted on(except in the uber rare circumstance that allows for multiple images such as tiles as components to build another map.)

Hi, I thinking about entering this (Challenge virgin here:?:) How large should these be and what dpi?

There's no restriction on image size (though the site limits the size of attached files) or on dpi.

However, people often want to use these sorts of maps for games, and there's a standard 100 pixels per grid best practice for most virtual tabletops. So, if you set the document up at 100dpi, and have a 1 inch square grid, that should work great for most uses, and keep the overall pixel size of the image manageable.

But you can win these challenges with an 800px wide map or an 8000px wide map - it's more about the content than the specs. Welcome to the challenge, jump right in!

I've been swamped as of late, so haven't had the chance to dedicate tiem to this. Hopefully I can come up with something in the very near future and make something decent before the deadline.

I have what I think is a great idea for this. However, I can't get to it until next week and the way things have been lately it's been so hard to find time for art. Here's hoping.

OK, got my idea... Now I just need to get around to doing it. :)

Shouldn't voting start today?

It probably should have, but I don't have the heart to close all the entries without a warning ... so here's the warning.

This challenge will close tomorrow at 10pm EDT (uh ... I think that's 2am GMT).

Is there any way we can also vote on Southern_land's Gooseneck Ridge map? I know he forgot to put the ***WIP thing on his last map, but he did put a lot of effort into it and it was a good map.

This has been remedied, the map added to the thumbnails page, and the voting rebooted. A huge thank you to Jacktannery for catching my blunder.

I figured it was an oversight; glad Gooseneck Ridge was added but it cost me my only vote.

Come back here mysterious voter and cast your ballot again!

Any way we can call back up the older voting thread so that I can find the name and identity of that person and bombard them with emails and private messages until they come back here and vote a second time?
