View Full Version : May 2012 Entry: Lost Dwarven Civilization

Ok, I have no idea if this is going to turn out but my main goal honestly is that I need this for a gaming session. Hopefully, it won't suck :) I wish I could attempt water-coloring the whole thing but it's in my sketchpad so the paper won't handle much abuse. I do have an idea I may try but we'll see about that later. As you can see the by the grey strip down the center if I don't do something it's going to look dumb. I could use a razor and slice the pages out but I really don't like to rip things out of my sketch book. I may ink this if the scans won't come out. Lastly, why does the scan come out huge compared to the actual paper size? This thing is like 3 times the size of the original. I had to shrink it down. Yet another reason I want to get my tablet!

I needed to get this posted or I would surely waffle until the challenge was over and I know the more people in the ring the more fun it is for everyone so here goes.

Oh, one last thing, any labels are just my quick scribbles to remind of things later. I will certainly be erasing those and writing them with my awesome printing skills :)

Honestly I don't think the center shadow hurts the map what so ever. To me it adds a sort of realism.8) An actual dimensional quality. Anyways looking good so far . Looks like the rest of the process might be a challenge in the BOOK. I'll be waiting for updates on this . :) The size variance may have something to do with the resolution that is was scanned in at? :? I'm no expert any scanning successes I've had were all trial and error !

Nice work Jaxilon! It looks like a good layout for a series of games.:)

I scan it in as a black and white photo at 300dpi (I think) and maybe that's what the problem is but I'm not sure. It looks about right at this size which is fine because if I did it on huge it might overload my PC.

The PC's own the keep on the southern edge but it's new to them and was recently taken over while they were out. Next time we play I purpose for them to find the entrance to the cave that leads to the entrance beneath the keep. Of course, if they are alert enough they may also find the secret doorway leading into a forgot Dwarven underground.

Nice looking start there Jaxilon - You have some good hand drawing skills.

Try using grayscale instead of black and white; I find that it picks up the lighter stuff better that way. Although honestly, I'm not sure what you were worried about, because that looks great!

The size differential is because 300 dpi displayed on a monitor that shows 100 dpi = 300/100 = 3 times as big. :)

Good start, Jax.

Ok, all this inking was more than I could take. I went out and picked up some PITT pens yesterday and I am anxious to try them out. Now I'm just wondering how I want to Ink this thing (Do I just make the passages one line thick or should I draw them with two lines to indicate the walls?). I'm frozen with indecision and I hate it when that happens.

Coolness...I have a feeling this is going to be a great contest this month!

05-18-2012, 02:15 PM
Great to know I'm not the only one who often pauses, pen drawn and wondering if I really want to start down this line of rendering roads/walls/roofs one way or the other. That's what I use Photoshop's eraser tool for! :D

Looks like a grand start, and I love the way the rivers are drawn. It hadn't occurred to me that the gutter line might add to the sense of realism, but I think Lostatsea is right, there. Worry not, Jaxilon!

05-18-2012, 02:23 PM
Nope, I do it too! And with a dip pen it's really dumb, dries the ink out ;)

@Sinnyo - ohhhh punch to the stomach, lol. Those aren't rivers those are the cavern passages connecting the caverns filled with buildings and so on. The whole thing is under a mountain. If I can figure out how to colorize this and I do it right hopefully that will stand out better.

Oh, of course! Put that down to a combination of my lack of proper scrutiny, and the convincing, natural-looking formation of said caverns. ^^;

Oh my goodness - just finished inking this and I'm seeing double or triple..I can barely read my screen. I seriously need to work in larger format. Curse mine crappy eyesight...gotta go lay down for a bit since I can't work anymore. I will probably get a scan up later tonight. I'm seriously thinking about using a razor to slice these pages out of my book since it will be much easier to work with if I do. (At least I think).

05-21-2012, 10:37 PM
Ewww. Hope you're not speaking literally ... it took me a year and three eye doctors to figure out why that was happening to me (seeing double) when I worked on stuff up close or read for a long time. No fun at all!

05-21-2012, 11:35 PM
Well, I had Intacs (corneal inserts) (http://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/inserts.htm) a few years ago. I tend to get blurred when I read for several hours or do stuff like what I did tonight evidently. I'm fine now after resting my eyeballs for a bit. It is not fun though since pretty much everything I love to do requires me being able to see.

I hear ya. I had to switch to listening to audiobooks, because even now that I have prisms in my glasses, if I read a book for several hours at a time (which is how I generally read books) I still get the double vision.

05-21-2012, 11:52 PM
Uhg, I have tried that but for the most part I hate the way other people read. Sometimes you can get a good reader but most are mediocre at best. I have considered going into that for a side job but I wouldn't know where to start. Of course, it would have to be in several hour increments, LOL.

Ha. Definitely true. I must confess, now that I've found a few good narrators I'll buy audible books completely out of my genre (sci-fi/fantasy, predictably enough) just because they're reading them.

05-22-2012, 02:33 AM
I just finished a great audio book and the guy reading it was fantastic. It's a sci-fi series of 4 books "Empire of Man" by David Weber and John Ringo. The Audio book is read by Stefan Rudnicki. So far he's the best I have heard but then I'm still pretty new to all that audio book stuff.

Here is as far as I got today. I'm just starting to put in the color using watercolor pencils and a very lightly moist brush because this paper won't take much at all. I think I will mount these two pages to a single backing sheet. One of these days I swear I will try doing something that isn't a total experiment :)

I may need to go over some of the coloring again but I have so much more to do that I can't fiddle a lot at this point if I plan to finish. Next scan I will line the pages up better :)

Are those the March Upcountry (etc.) ones? I really liked those; I actually read those in text. Unfortunately the narrator for his Honor Harrington books is godawful.

Color is looking good!

05-22-2012, 07:03 PM
Yep, those are the ones. I'm sorry to hear about the Honor Harrington narrator. I read a bunch of those books and they were great.

Thanks for the encouragement too :)

I may have to use a camera to try and capture this thing. For some reason a lot of my colorwash is not showing up :( It's rather irritating because the original does look better than what I am getting scanned in.

Anyway, more coloring done...I am really running out of time. I need to get this thing formatted and locked in. It would be easy if we weren't trying to do this all sans digital.

I like your colors. That border really makes them feel like tunnels. I wish you luck finding the right scan settings. I can tell there's a lot of color missing in the interior of the mountain.

05-24-2012, 09:55 AM
Thanks flocko. My wife is kicking my butt on this one because she thinks it's lacking my usual pop factor. She said it's kind of "flat" looking. I've been working on that and I think it's getting a bit better but sheesh. I finally took her to the internet and showed her a bunch of maps depicting underground tunnels and we realized she's just not that into the underground stuff. So I'm thinking, hey, maybe there's something to be discovered here only I haven't quite hit yet. We'll see. The important part is I'm learning and trying out a bunch of new things on this.

I can't wait to share the additions I have made but I've got to wait until I see if I can pull it off or not.

05-24-2012, 08:30 PM
Looking good Jax. I particularly like your cliffs.

05-26-2012, 02:10 AM
Well, it's too big for my scanner now but I have taken a picture using my wife's phone which didn't come out all that well. It's a new phone so not sure if we are using it correctly. It's just not coming out very clear. I had to shrink the image down or it was just too blurry. I have included some close ups of the various additions. Also, my wife has access to a large bed scanner at her work so we will go by at some point and scan the whole thing in which will be nice to finally get a decent scan.

I think I've caught a new bug though because now I want to do more watercolors. I went and picked up a pad and some decent brushes so we'll see how it goes. I learned a lot just doing the little illustrations for this map.

05-26-2012, 10:53 AM
They're addictive, aren't they? :) I picked up the bug about a year ago and have been fiddling with them ever since!

The new additions look great, Jax.

05-28-2012, 10:05 PM
Even the scanner at my wife's work wasn't big enough..almost but not quite and I had to create two images and line them up which was a pain because they just weren't quite straight but I finally got the rotation down.

I had to copy paste the black margins on the sides from the bottom because during scanning I lost the edges. Nothing was modified in the artwork itself.

I had to do the same thing, because my scanner at work was big enough, but CRAPPY. It kept auto-contrasting all of the detail out of the thing no matter what I did.
