Could please someone turn this Worldmap into an old pergament-like worldmap?

The blank map:

What is the scale of your map? And what's your optimum file size; will you be printing this for a book, a poster, or are you keeping it as a digital copy? Time frame; when do you need it by? Compensation; paid or unpaid?

06-10-2012, 01:03 PM
its unpaid because this map is just for me and friends. I am sure we wont print it ever so i think the size isn't very important.

There is no timescale but a fast result is welcome^^

06-11-2012, 01:48 AM
Here's a progress shot with coastlines and rivers on old parchment. Is this sorta what you were going for?

06-11-2012, 10:42 AM
thats the mapstyle I'm looking for! :)

06-13-2012, 12:47 AM
I'm trying out a few different detail ideas. If you have any thoughts on the matter, speak up.

06-13-2012, 09:43 AM
maybe a compass on a corner of the map?
A ship in the central sea would be great too ;)

06-13-2012, 02:36 PM
Alrighty =)

06-15-2012, 03:43 AM
Finished the little water lines around the coasts and I was suddenly inspired to give it a more used appearance... but if you prefer the flat version, that's still there. ;)

06-15-2012, 09:21 AM
no this idea is great i did never thought about that! :) But its a little too bright in my opinion^^
Could you make everything a little bit darker and dirtier? (More used appearance for example: http://watermarked.cutcaster.com/cutcaster-photo-100682605-old-map.jpg )
but its of course up to you how to realize that :)

06-15-2012, 01:08 PM
I roughed up a couple of smaller versions as examples, but if you like one I can apply the same techniques to the original file.

The left one has a bit more contrast and saturation.

45673 45674

06-16-2012, 10:58 AM
the right one is more what i'm looking for! :)

06-16-2012, 12:45 PM
I agree, my favorite too. =)

06-16-2012, 01:13 PM
thats great! :)
my friends responded very enthusiastic when i showed them that our world now takes shape ;)

06-18-2012, 01:06 PM
=) I'm glad they like it. Here's another update. I applied the aging techniques to the large file, did the ship, and I'm still messing with the trees. Added some firs up north west continent. Very rough little pinpricks. Don't like them yet. =P

06-18-2012, 02:34 PM
i like that pine trees^^

06-23-2012, 11:37 PM
I made some progress... and lost it when my computer crashed before I could save the updates. grr
Just didn't want you thinking I'd abandoned it.

06-24-2012, 12:17 AM
repped! nice work.

06-24-2012, 02:55 AM
Thanks for the rep! =)

06-25-2012, 01:38 AM
Okay, here's another update. I've reordered my process to do the labels first and then work the other details around them, because the trees were ****ing me off. :P

Do you want to have the world name (Industa?) on the map as well? Any other labels or info? Change the tilt of the compass to face north or east or completely change the style? Other ideas? Color?

Oops: Forgot to attach the map. =D

06-25-2012, 10:48 AM
It's nearly perfect! :) You're right with doing the fonts first. the only one thats missing are, well.... the ****ing trees ;) :D
inserting the Worldname (Industa - right ;) ) is a good idea :)

06-25-2012, 01:07 PM
haha! Okay. I wonder if you would mind translating 'Map of Industa' ... or whatever you'd like it to read. I could just put 'Industa' but it might not stand out as much from the other labels. ... unless I do something artsy around it, of course. We'll see. I decided to keep the little pinpricks for the northern trees. ;)

06-25-2012, 01:38 PM
Maybye you write "Die Welt Industa" (the world of Industa) ?

And please keep the pinetrees on Vankar and Gothus as they are now! it's perfect ! :)
Now there are only normal trees and desert palms missing! :) (You can find the places with deserts on my "zonemap" in the first post! :)

06-25-2012, 01:53 PM
"Normal trees," he says. :P I live in Maine, for Pete's sake! Pine trees are normal. haha =)

06-25-2012, 01:58 PM
oh I'm sorry xD
Normal trees like oaks for example xD

06-25-2012, 02:05 PM
I know, I know. I'm just joshin' ya ;)

06-26-2012, 01:26 PM
Sounds like this is well in hand. Marking it as taken.

06-26-2012, 03:14 PM
Thanks Ravs =) Wasn't sure what to do with that.

06-27-2012, 12:38 PM
............... Big Palm Trees ........................... Smaller Palm Trees

46068 46069

Neither of them are to scale compared with the mountains, but they fill the space better. Which do you like more?

06-27-2012, 01:05 PM
hmm difficult xD i think a good amount of the smaller palms along the coasts would be the best ;)

06-27-2012, 02:13 PM
Huh. I woulda gone with the bigger ones. Okay, so... Wait wait wait. You want me to remove the smaller palms from their locations and put them around the coasts? Or add more around the coasts ( ;) )? All the coasts? I've begun putting in the Normal trees, as well, on the northern tip of Ankora.

06-27-2012, 04:09 PM
maybe a mix between the two sizes would be right ;) but not in the innerland, the coast is a better place for them in my opinion^^

the normal trees are great;)

EDIT: It's "ZENTRALES BECKEN" not "ZENTRALIS BECKEN" - that fault stayed hidden a long time xD

06-27-2012, 06:20 PM
oops. I probably switched it when I decided to hand-write the labels. I'll fix it. And the trees.

06-28-2012, 05:38 PM
I did fix the middle sea's name on the original. But the file got so large I had to make a flat copy to draw the trees. So no worries.

06-29-2012, 07:30 AM
good job! :) May I say that my friends and I decided that the (normal) trees in the north of Ankora changed to pinetrees? (logical decision :) )

And could you please add some pine trees in the northern region of Midas and Septus? (Just a few pinetrees along the northern coast)

That'd be great

06-29-2012, 08:00 PM
This map looks great Chashio! Have some Rep! :)

07-03-2012, 06:20 PM
Thanks Lyandra! Alrighty then. Some choices for the title. I personally like the ones with the underline and/or underline and V accent, because it kinda balances the compass lines and also sets it apart from the other labels. Note, this is still on the second 'tree' file, so the Zentrales label hasn't changed yet. Do you have any other changes you'd like done to this map, regarding the trees or ? Would you like a scale on it (miles/km/leagues), or letters for the compass directions?

46274 46275 46276

46277 46278

07-03-2012, 07:32 PM
very nice! :) It's still "ZENTRALIS BECKEN", not "ZENTRALES BECKEN " though....

My favourite is the first version with the V accent! :)
And then one thing has to be changed - there are no oaks in the southern world - would you replace them with palms?
Ther is no need of scale, but you can put the directions to the compass
(english - german "Letter")
(North - Nord "N")
(South - Süden "S")
(West - Westen "W")
(East - Osten "O")

07-03-2012, 09:44 PM
What is the "southern world" exactly, where I should be changing trees to palms? Lower Septus and the Isles? I was following your zones map. Do you mean for them to be rain forest? I could see if I can sketch out something else that'll work for that. Palm trees might seem like desert, since we did the palms for those.

07-04-2012, 01:44 PM
the Islands can be tropical and every tree in the south of Flusshain should be a palmtree or something that fits into the region (so : yes ;) a rainforest :) )

07-05-2012, 02:34 PM
Here's a possibility for the rainforest vegetation. The thicker palmy stuff by the river may be too much, I'll let you give your own opinion on that, but for the trees... They're a bit taller with high canopy and some fern-ish shrubbery lower down. I also did another palm tree top-right, and I still think it looks like an extension of the desert... :| (blank skepticism)

07-06-2012, 07:24 AM
the big new trees look great! keep them :) Maybe ther should be more of them to look like a big rainforest. the zones along the big river are good, too! :)

07-06-2012, 10:58 AM
Alright, I'll finish them up.

07-07-2012, 01:46 AM
Actually, before I draw all of them in (not very friendly and accommodating forest, this)... is it too thick, or just about right?

07-07-2012, 08:43 AM
I dont know. On the one hand its looks very nice, but on the other it doesnt fit with the rest of the map

07-07-2012, 09:33 AM
I know. That's why it's frustrating me. I'll keep working on it.

07-14-2012, 09:59 AM
I'm sorry for the wait. My computer crashed and I just got it back from the repair man. Haven't reconnected the external drive with all my files or re-installed programs, so it might be a few more days before I can get anything done with the map. I apologize.

07-17-2012, 01:02 PM
Had to recreate my brush preset (now I'll know to back that folder up with the rest of my files), and I decided to go with palm trees, with a bit of scribbley underbrush to differentiate it from the desert. The perspective is working better than the flat trees, anyway. If you're happy with it, I'll move the tree layers back to the original file so the ocean label typo gets fixed... and call it a wrap. =)

07-17-2012, 01:26 PM
much better! :) well done, Chashio ;)
If you fix "ZENTRALES BECKEN" now, the map is finished! :)

07-17-2012, 03:39 PM
=D Finished map.

07-17-2012, 03:45 PM
F*CK yeah xD

Finally it's finished. :) Thank you very very much!
Now what about the whole Midas thing I sent to you? Do you want to finish it, too? :D
It's no problem, if you don't want...

07-17-2012, 03:50 PM
LOL =) You're welcome!

The Midas continent map, you still want that one to be digitized as is, yes? Similar color/parchment/brush style to the world map, or different?

07-17-2012, 03:55 PM
yes you surely can use the same style as you did with Industa before ;) ! I think the only difference would be the big amount of details and that the objects must have another scale to another now (mountains have to be bigger than the forest sprites) But I think you know the best what to do ;)

07-17-2012, 04:04 PM
Okay. Yep. Can do.

08-02-2012, 04:48 PM
In progress. Starting on labels (would size down next, but)... may end up doing those with type instead of handwriting (because there's a ton of them).

08-02-2012, 04:50 PM
The first WIP Snapshot and I'm already very impressed by your work! :)

08-07-2012, 01:27 AM
Tell me if these labels are okay for you so far, and please double-check my spelling. ;) I decided to do them by hand (takes fewer layers and, I think, matches the style better) but I can change if need be. Also, is there a specific symbol(s) that might represent Midas overall, or Orian, that I could work into the corners for you? Not absolutely necessary, but it could add a bit of story flavor if you like. Or I could do something off the top of my head.

08-08-2012, 12:16 PM
the names are good! :) I'll come back to the topic with the corners, when if have a good idea.

08-09-2012, 03:46 PM
Okay =)

On the town called Merris (the label is on the lake, but not pictured here) I just want to make sure I have the spelling right, as your original penciled jot had only one R in it. And, here is one other missing town label where I can't read your scribble. ;)

08-09-2012, 04:05 PM
I think you meant "Merin" in the east of Haringoth?

And the missing townname you are looking for is "Kahlen"

08-09-2012, 04:58 PM
Thanks =)

Okay, Merin. Your typed guide had two R's so I followed that. I'll change it.

08-09-2012, 07:44 PM
oh sry my fault^^

08-20-2012, 01:43 PM
No fault. =) Just a typo. Can I get your opinion on this? I've been playing around with how to do the water shading around the coastline. Wanted it to stand out more, to give it a definitive feel (the interior details are so much that I thought it needed some solidity), but still be hand-done. My favorite option, so far, but it's not my map. ;) What do you think?

08-20-2012, 10:06 PM
i think the coastlines should be more intense. could you make them fading out in horizontal lines?

08-21-2012, 12:41 AM
I will see what I can come up with.

09-05-2012, 11:34 AM
=| It is being difficult. I've been trying different approaches, but I keep running into the same wall; the trouble is keeping everything legible whilst making it all look good. I'll certainly keep at it, but I'd also like to run this idea by you... some sort of color wash? This test is actually a blue that has yellowed with the rest of the paper over time. Could be interesting. Also, I think I'm going to redo the large-water labels to wrap around the continent more like the rest of them, before I finish everything. And maybe play with some type of corner illustrations/ or square up the paper to fit the shape better (if you have any suggestions or truly dislike the illustration idea, let me know, I'll save them for last).

48035 48036

09-05-2012, 05:49 PM
i like the first one - keep it if you want. I find another mistake with the fonts. The City on the Harken Isles "Harken Inseln" is written "Barsten" it has to be "Barten". Well, that seems to be my fault. I forgot to mark this city, sry^^
But good job again ;)

09-05-2012, 06:05 PM
Cashio, that is really pretty work. I love the style.

09-05-2012, 06:47 PM
Yes, lovely work Chashio!

09-05-2012, 08:34 PM

That's an easy fix. No problem. Should Harken Inseln be two words, then? And Klingen Inseln? Nordliche/Sudliche Splitter Inseln?

Cashio, that is really pretty work. I love the style.

Yes, lovely work Chashio!

Thanks, guys. =) But I don't get much credit for this one. Rwexler provided a very pretty pencil/paper version via photo that, for the most part, I traced onto my digital parchment. He made it very easy... except for the trees. Those kinda hurt. ;)

09-05-2012, 08:57 PM
Those maps are fantastic! How did you do the irregular outlines? I love them!

09-05-2012, 09:07 PM
Those maps are fantastic! How did you do the irregular outlines? I love them!

Which irregular outlines? =)

Edit: While attempting to figure out what you meant, I found a road that ends nowhere. haha! Thank you, Schwarzkreuz.

09-05-2012, 09:13 PM
Continental Borders, Rivers, Landmass. They are not just straigt generated lines.

09-05-2012, 09:49 PM
Continental Borders, Rivers, Landmass. They are not just straigt generated lines.

Ah. Yes. I created a handful of new brushes from a combination of scanned ink blots, fiddling, a little bit of cursing, and brush settings that include a wide-range size jitter and 0% minimum diameter. Then I just varied the pressure I put on the stylus while I drew. =) You can actually get a pretty nifty liner by adjusting a few of the settings on the default graphite pencil... but I don't know if that comes with every version of photoshop.

09-19-2012, 03:05 AM
How do you want the title displayed?

09-19-2012, 07:52 PM
i think the area below the frame would be good for that.
Maybe you have another better idea? :)

09-19-2012, 08:11 PM
That might work. Should it read 'Der Kontinent Midas +633'? ... I have no clue what that last bit signifies. And do you need a compass and/or scale on this one? And/or anything else? I attempted a couple of illustration ideas but they didn't really fit so I took them out. Also did a little detail work on the border, but I'm not sure I like that either. I'm realizing that it's difficult to do illustrations on maps without knowing anything about the people or cities or actual terrain. =]

09-20-2012, 08:27 AM
yes you re absolutely right with that. "Der Kontinent Midas +633" is the right title.
The scale is also a good idea. The Landmass has a length of about 500km from east do west. And from North to the south its about 650Km. I hope that this can help you with the scale.
And now i try to work out something for the illustrations. I think I'll use some of the blassons i made, but i'm not sure right now

09-20-2012, 05:11 PM
Some coat of arms might work very well indeed. If you decide you want to use some, or would like to see what it could look like, send me some clear pictures of what you created and the positions you want them (lower left/top right/etc) and I'll draw them in.

And I should be able to work up a scale from that, yes. =)

10-05-2012, 05:13 PM
All right, what do you think of this? The scale is not exactly as you suggested, because the map dimensions are more square. And I tried to make it easy... so one cm = 50km.
