"Isomorphic projection? What am I going to do in an isomorphic projection?"
"wait -- doesn't Inkscape have an isomorphic grid setting? Ah, yes, here it is..."
"I'll just play around a little here..."
"Hmmm.... I wonder if I can do an arch?"
"How about a row of arches? And what's on the other side of the structure? More arches?"
"Doodling some paths between them..."
"Oooh, if I make some of them into stairs, and they can go over and under each other..."
"ooohhh, this is WAY too much fun!"

I'm going to have a lot of fun with this one.

Ah, oops -- I just noticed that I let some two-point-perspective slip into my isometric projection. I'll correct that with the next upload.

OK. I've excised the accidental two-point perspective, but haven't fixed the paths yet (since isometrizing it made all the angles shift).

Edited to add: OH! I could have fixed it without flip-flopping the angles by adjusting the top of the arcade rather than the bottom.

(Lots of possibilities. I'm going to have fun with this one.)

Ok, time to take a break and get some lunch.

Oops, just noticed a spatial error -- hope I can fix it without too much re-working

Reminds me of the Never-ending-staircase, except this one doesn't APPEAR to be completely impossible.

I think my brain just died, trying to sort out the twists. Very cool idea!

LindaJeanne appears to be M.C. Escher's long lost granddaughter. Coming along nicely.

My brain is getting tangled up in Gordian knots, trying to keep these paths straight!

Why don't you just map out some DNA while you are at it? :)

I liked the first couple better than the subsequent "fixes" ... but then Escher has always been a favorite :-). Nice stuff!

Actually, I'm starting to think I may agree :).

I've got a couple of different ideas of where I want to go with this -- so I think I'm going to play around with the possibilities a bit before I post the next update.

Awesome idea! I'm looking forward to seeing the final product. :)

Thanks, guys :)

This still needs work -- especially the colors, which I'm not happy with. Also, the value contrast leaves something to be desired. Also, I'd like to make it more map-like.

This reminds me of that scene in Labyrinth. In terms of making it more map-like, if this was some kind of err... central "hub", then illustrating the entrances and exits might do that.

both that scene and this image owe some of their inspiration to M.C.Escher :)

Alright, not a huge difference visually yet, but it's the beginning of a new direction that I'm trying with this:

Doesn't look like much of a change, but I've been playing around with a few things, and this is just roughing out a direction I'm going to experiment with going:

If this were ever built, I'd probably fall to my death from the bottom step, just from looking up. Looks great!

I love that quote! I'm tempted to .sig it :)
(Tried to 'rep you for it, but looks like I can't yet).

Rivers!
...On staircases...?

I kinda figured you'd go with doors or something.

"Anyone got any grid paper ? - Ah thanks, ill map today then."
"Ok, so 10ft west, 10ft north, north door. Yup !"
"Up some steps. Ok, 10ft east, 10ft south...err right !"

10 minutes later,

"Braaaaaaaains.... braaaaaaains.... I.... kill.... DM...."

Love this bit of artwork.

haha, use it if you want. =)

Rivers. Well that was unexpected. But, since doors have been done, rivers should do nicely. =) I am immensely enjoying the progression of this piece.

Strange how the water falling off the edges doesn't fall straight down :o

Strange how the water falling off the edges doesn't fall straight down :o

It does in the places where I've gone back and properly painted the landscape already. :)

In the places where it's still just roughly sketched out, however, you're right. I've never had great fine motor control, so I do the detail work zoomed way in. But I do rough sketches zoomed out, so that I can see the big picture. Hence zigs where there should be zags (or straight lines).

So no, the gravity-defying behavior of the sketched water is not intentional :). I considered having the water act differently, or have gravity in several directions, but decided against it. I figured that making the water behave in the usual fashion would help to anchor the more surreal aspects of the landscape.

...and here I am, scrambling at the last minute once again :).

This isn't done yet, so I expect to have one more up before the contest closes, but uploading what I have now just to be safe.

I need to choose less ambitious projects -- things I can realisitically finish in the timeframe allowed!

This is as done as it's going to get before the deadline:

I just noticed another error -- another river doing something it shouldn't -- but I'm going to leave this one in.

So, there is (at least) one spot where a river is doing something impossible :).

I need to choose less ambitious projects -- things I can realisitically finish in the timeframe allowed!

This is one of the hardest things about mapping to a deadline, and perhaps the biggest reason we do short, "gotta start it after the challenge starts" challenges. So that we can all learn what it is we CAN do in the timeframe allowed :) So rest assured, we're all learning with you!
