View Full Version : Cartographers' Choice Nominations

Hey all,

It was suggested (and I wholeheartedly agree) for folks to nominate maps they thought would make good Cartographers' Choice maps. So to encourage this, I give you the nominations thread!

Please take a look at the CC Archive sticky to make sure the map you're nominating hasn't already been made a choice map, and then nominate them by replying here.

-- OR --

If for some reason you'd like to nominate a map on the down low, you can also use the Contact Us link at the bottom of the forums to send a message to just the CLs for your nomination.

Thanks for the help!

Current Nominations:
City of Val Nevan - by Blaidd Drwg (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?19378-City-of-Val-Nevan&p=191412#post191412)

Well, I have a nomination alright, and it's Blaid Drwg's City of Val Nevan (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?19378-City-of-Val-Nevan&p=191412#post191412). Simply put, it's one of the best maps I've seen here.

Cheers,

Um... Bump. Just because Blaid Drwg's "City of Val Nevan" maps is so good I feel it would be a travesty were it to slip through the cracks.

Cheers,

That really is a must as a choice map. With the new look site posting up choice maps is hard for bears with little computer brain like myself, but I'll give it a go sometime soon.

Will Val Nevan Be a CCM? There hasnt been another nominated map so far, and also support this Choice.

I also put the latest Elyden (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?19685-the-High-empire-of-Korachan-and-the-Inner-Sea) map for the CC run. It had been very inspiring and had a very intense time in the Regional WIP area and was subject to good discussions. Its impact on the Regional Maps Area is evidently, so I would like to propose it for a CC.

You guys are awesome ;)

I'd like to nominate this baby (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?19986-Grey-Worlds-Silver-and-Jade-world-map-by-TheRedEpic)by TheRedEpic. It blows my mind away.

There are quiet a bunch of members, who are working On maps on a professional Level, each one of them with a refined Style and advance techniques. Most prominent in my own opinion are Torstan, RedEpic, Djekspek, Sapiento and Diamond. I think most of their new maps would be likely to Be nominated with that level of expertise. I am not sure about the structures of the CC but i think its about to hightlights gems, which would perhaps just disapear in the Forum archievs. A possibility for lessser known users to shine.
I totally agree with putting up Reds new map, dont misunderstand me, i like them all.

Yeh I'm thinking there really should be a more rigid criteria because realistically the people Schwarzkreuz mentioned I could literally nominate near everything they have done... and that seems kind of pointless :) Stuff along the lines of:

- Only new submissions from <insert date> (to stop people just going through an artists entire back catalog)
- Submissions must be of a certain size (most stuff can look beautiful when far away/small, but may look less impressive when you can actually make out the details)
- Submissions made for the monthly Challenge/Lite Challenge are excluded

All Choice maps have be approved by a moderator - 5 compasses does not automatically assure the map will be a choice map and a lack of 5 compasses does not necessarily mean that a map will not be chosen as a choice map (although it's unlikely).

Schwarzkreuz hits the nail on the head when he says that part of the reason for having choice maps is to highlight gems which might get lost in the huge tide of maps coming through as well as to showcase some of the real beauties that the best of the guild (often, but by no means always professionals) on this board create. We also like to showcase a variety of styles and subject matter. Unfortunately putting up choice maps is a bit of an involved process and we haven't been as diligent as we should have been in keeping up to speed. So I've rewound to Van Nevan and we will be picking maps from that point onwards as choice maps going forward.

there hasn't been a post here in a while so I thought i'd add a suggestion - -max-'s old empire of lorn map (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/21811-old-empire-lorn-fantasy-world-map.html) very nice map.

im also going through the finished threads, rating maps :)

I don't know what are the criterias for a featured map and if Lorn's map deserves it regarding those ones but thanks Vorropoaiah :-)

I'd say it does. Rating maps. Good idea.

There have been several Deserving Contributions of late that I'd like to nominate for the Cartographers Choice award. In no particular order:

Max's Provinces of Selen (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/21691-provinces-selen-fantasy-map.html) (though he has several other noteworthy pieces as well);
vorropohaiah's The City-Kingdoms of the Hareshk (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/22291-finished-city-kingdoms-har%E9shk.html);
Blaidd Drwg's City of Galastan (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/22644-city-galastan.html#post210498);
Obliro's Oakfall (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/20471-oakfall.html).

To be honest I don't feel comfortable to be nominated with Provinces of Selen since I used someone else brushes on it (Quabbe's ones), even if they were free to use. I guess a nomination would be better with whole personnal stuff on a map.

By the way I concur with The City-Kingdoms of the Haresk and City of Galastan choices, which are two masterpieces.

The Provinces of Selen is my favorite out of the four, with The City of Glastan as a close second. The city Kingdoms of the Harask, also caught my eye. I've made one map in which I've included the family crest of the ruling families, but never thought to use the crest as the city icon.

All three of the other maps are excellent. My personal favourites among these are Haréshk and Selen (no matter how Max feels about it :P). I definitely think they are better than my own map. Some of the best I've seen. And since both Vorropohaiah and Max are much more active guild members than I am, they deserve a the featured map more. Besides, my map's already getting a lot of attention on DeviantArt and has helped me land my first commission, so I'm already happy as a clam. :D Give someone else Eternal Glory :)

great news on the commission!

On a similar note, my Hareshk map helped get a couple of queries regarding commissions too, which is a great start for me. I don't know if it factors in though I already have a featured map award while other nominees don't so perhaps there are better candidates?

thanks :)

I don't know exactly how featured maps are chosen, but whatever Vorropahaiah and Blaidd said ( ;) ) their both maps are true amazing works. Having already a featured one or being congratulated on DA shouldn't prevent them to be rewarded like they deserve. After all CG is not DA and I already saw cartographers with 2 featured maps here. I'm kinda happy to be nominated along those two beast map(artists)makers :) and I hope we can friendly "challenge" together on this nomination (maybe along others cartographers to join).

I think all these maps are amazing, each in their own way. I would be hard pressed to pick one over the others.

I also think Max is being to hard on himself, using someone else's brushes does not detract from how you used them and how the final map looks.

If Max is being hard with himself, someone saw this map?

Yes, please do! There are a number of maps that have been posted over the past year and it would be great to at least some of them recognized with a CC award. It would also be great to see more people from the community put forth these nominations, it's a good reminder and motivator for us CLs.

Great idea! I'll nominate some :) These are from the top of my head, there are of course many more fantastic maps here, but when seeing these I remember thinking that they where CC-worthy.

Lingon's nominations are all good (especially Ilanthar's Eldoran), but I'd like to nominate a different map by Ilanthar: the city of Argona. THW

Thanks guys :)!

But I'm not sure to be confortable with that... I mean, there are a lot of good maps in here (which inspired me much btw)!
It's not false modesty, just a fact. Anyhow, I'm really not confortable about Eldoran as a CC, as I used the existing coastlines of the Lythian continent of the Hârn World.

And, that's not gonna be good for my ego ;)

+1 vote for those nominated by Lingon and THW.

I'd also like to nominate Vardenia & Urenia (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/26410-vardenia-urenia.html) by - Max -.

I'm fairly certain that there are load of others I've seen in the short time that I've been here that are at that top level, but can't think of any others right now :(
