Well, here's my first shwag at this. I left in all the fluff and just crunched it down to damn near obscurity. 1600x1200 @ 72.6Kb

I'll see if I can't improve the quality after I take my dogs for a walk...

Yea, quality is going to need some work. However, I do need to say that there is something I STRONGLY like about this map and I wish others would do.

The mine is organic and looks like it was actually constructed with mining equipment or even just picks and shovels. This is how a dungeon should look.

Why, oh, why did I think that mines would be a good idea? Those rails are killing me. JPEGs and skinny lines do not make good bedfellows. Blurring out the textures saved me some space, so I was able to squeak out a bit more quality. Well, relatively speaking - it still looks like something my dog left on the carpet. I'll keep tweaking and experimenting...

I tend to disagree...I like the quality and think this is shaping up to be quite an awesome entry.

Thanks. That's damn high praise. I think it comes from not being constrained by the grid. Also, as a DM, I have a fondness for non-linear dungeons - the bad-guys have plenty of ways to circle around and come up from behind the players... ;)

Anyway, here's another shwag. I tried converting it to a wee PNG format. Definately sharper, but I had to give up my textures...

I'm going to start a new thread on this...

That is one great mine

lucky miners didn't have to delve to far:P
and no self respecting Dwarf wold lay claim to it;)

but it is so organic and earthy

oh and i wholeheartedly agree Never be constrained by a grid

I changed the style a bit with this one. Very little texture on the walls and lots of texture on the floors with a deep bevel. I also added a dash of water for variety.

This will probably be my last as I will be quite busy for the next few weeks (but you never know).

I think your mine looks very good and organic rlucci, but shouldn't the bevel be reversed to create a concave rather than a convex illusion?

It's an optical illusion thing (We had this discussion on another thread many moons ago (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=840&highlight=optical+illusion)). It either looks concave or convex depending on how your brain interprets it, like an Esher drawing or the two faces and the flower vase illusion.

Holy rusted metal Batman, you're right. I just stared at it for ages and forced by eyes to shift perspective and lo and behold it did. Sorry rlucci, they say art is subjective, but Ravs is correct it will look concave to some people and convex to others.

There is another map that was posted recently with the same issue. I explained in that thread... can't seem to find it right now. Anyway, it has to do with the lighter colored floor and darker surroundings. We have been trained from early age to equate lighter with higher - consider a standard map that has the white peaks denoting highest elevation as well as the water color darker is deeper. So when you are presented with a map like this regardless of the bevel we immediately process the lighter color as higher. The shadows simply magnify the effect and make it more pronounced.

This map looks like a fun adventure! Nice idea!

get rid of the highlights on the floor all together

it should get rid of the embossed look

I had a bit of time this afternoon to work on my map. I tweaked and experimented and generally messed around with it until I hit on something that I like better and doesn't lend itself to that inverted 3-d effect so much as my last map...

The first version is still my favorite.

Just my 2 cent novice opinion. :)
