Trying a new style, tell me any critiques.

(Note: The image is half of the actual resolution. And the reason its so grainy is because of the compression.)

This is pretty nice, I like this style keep up the good work. I'll be following along V

Good start e_e. Have you tried to give hills an extra texture? Are the white spots in the mountain texture compression artifacts?

09-13-2012, 03:13 PM
No, it's from the texture its self. Its the only suitable one i've been able to find. I think i'm going to do a re-haul of the texture, especially the ground cover. They look particularlly unfiting. But, this indicates what my main color scheme would be aimed for.

Y'know, i actually kind of like it with the white spots in it. Gives it character.

Those are *really* effective mountains. How'd you generate them?

The coastline and the mountains and the river are all at somewhat different apparent scales. The fineness of the indentations in the coast to me looks smaller scale than the mountains. And the visible width of the river, with what are probably pretty small islands, seems to be larger scale. Each by itself is awesome, and won't stop a map from looking pretty good, if you have such realistic terrain as that. But I bet the overall effect steps up a notch if the scales of the different elements match.

A small-ish update. I specifically need help on the ocean/rivers, they don't look right.

(Note: Half of the size of actual image, and only at 11 quality. So, there will be compression errors.)

That's great, I especially like the texture and feel of the mountains.

You've got a bunch of lakes with no outflow, though. Most of those ones on the righthand half look like they should drain down the valley into that existing river - even the rightmost one up in the mountains looks to have an outflow down the mountain valley to the left of it.

There's also something a bit odd where your rivers hit the ocean - your rivers seem to continue out to sea for a bit?

09-24-2012, 02:50 PM
For the lakes, i know, i'll have to add something. I don't want any main tributaries up there.
As for the rivers, its an artifact from the rivers layer. After the main image is complete i'll smudge and blend it into the ocean.

Your mountains are amazing. I would love to know how you made them so I can shameless steal them for my own maps. :D Way to go! Have some rep

09-27-2012, 03:32 PM
Well, I sorta stole them all ready! Sorta, anyway. I took heavy inspiration from Pasis's maps, using geo control and all that. You can probably search for him and find it.

Another small update, this is like my fourth time attempting to do forests on this map.

Edit: I forgot to half the size of the image, i'll post in the morning.

And - here we are.

This is looking really nice eVile, I dig the colors, and your rivers look great as well.

Thanks! I'm glad i'm finally over my little 'no inspiration' spree brought upon by my recent personal breakup.

10-03-2012, 04:04 PM
And here is the last stretch, any comments or criticism's before I post it as finished?

Your typographic work on the title is just lovely!

Hi eViLe_eAgLe,

I absolutely love the colour scheme and the design of the mountains in this image! On the other hand, I'm not sure I like the way your rivers work. I still feel there should be a big ass river running roughly NW-SE, draining all these unnaturally undrained lakes. After all, where else would all the water go that flows into them?

10-04-2012, 09:55 AM
@Caenwyr, I know how you feel. I would do that if I could. But, at this point in a project I would of had to rework most of the layers, and thats something I just didn't want to deal with, not to mention having to go into another program to draw the rivers on, because I don't have enough memory to handle this large map and draw without stuttering on it.

@Arsheesh Thanks!
I've uploaded a high res at my deviant art.

'Siamese Inns'! Ha! :D

Nice work, EE. I really like this one.

10-05-2012, 06:22 PM
Ah, the Siamese Inns. I had to do something about the towns where I placed two inn's too little room for two names, so, same inn, but two branches. Works, right? xD
