View Full Version : [September 2012 Entry] The lone Tower of the Far Shores

Hi Guild,

This month I will try again to compete here with a map.
After a bit of thinking I want to make a map base on the style and color of a former Painting I did.
Here is the Image:

Wow really nice painting Schwarzkreuz. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out, just make sure it doesn't resemble Lukc's Purple Worm map (although that actually inspired me to be honest :D ). As someone who doesn't really paint digitally if you're looking for a similar style and color I really can't wait to watch this as a WIP (regular updates!).

Yes I try my best to finish things this round

Ooh, that's a great little teaser Schwazkreuz. I'll be following this thread with interest.

I will try to get things running next week. Thanks for your interest.

That's a cool picture!

No progress on this entry? :(

09-20-2012, 05:28 AM
Yes, I know, I am a bit lame ass on this again. But I have to earn my money first. OMG, I still have some Maps in my commission-pipeline, till the end of the Month. So perhaps I wont make it in time.....

Here are some images I will use as inspiration.
The black and White is from Übel-Blatt
the others are from Sparth

That's cooool!

09-21-2012, 05:52 AM
Yes today i will finaly have Time to start.

09-21-2012, 09:35 PM
Its started now as a very basic sketch, after that came the color. Its a new approach for me so I hope thsi will work out somehow.

This looks to have uber-potential! Can't wait to see it progress.

Can I be the first to say (after Arsheesh), that looks amazing. I love the industrial look of the tower and the colour scheme. Can you explain how you did it?

09-22-2012, 07:11 AM
The colorsheme was etablished with the multiply paintlayer. After that i did darken the tower and added some basic textures. Than i startet to paint with the hard round brush, the normal One wish pressure sensibility, on opacity 40-60% and constant 45% on the other thing(forgot the english name, its Next to opacity and controlls the dencity of the paint )

Yes, Rest is plainly painting by Hand, which obviously Takes Time.

So you guys think such an image is valid in the Map Contest?

09-22-2012, 04:18 PM
I'd say it is valid, since it's going in completely side on.

09-22-2012, 05:01 PM
One of the "requirements" of a map is that it shows (with varying degrees of accuracy) some location in relation to another...or path from one to another...if you point out the various locations and or points of interest on the map I am sure that those "requirements" would be met. At least IMOHO (In My Own Humble Opinion)

My first thoughts when I saw this was Fantastic artwork, but not really a map. Looking closer it does have some map-like elements, so I would say Let it in the challenge. As many have said before on similar questions, it's the voters who decide with their votes anyway.

09-22-2012, 09:29 PM
It's a great piece of work that's for sure. I'd say it's valid though I am assuming the added map-like information will be forthcoming. Obviously if you just left it as is, it's simply a great piece of artwork, but it's not a map.

09-23-2012, 07:33 PM
I agree with that, Larp. I still ahve to figure things out how to do it.

But first here is another Update on the Tower.

Ok The Tower itself is finished.
I decided to replace all decorations and to concentrate on teh tower itself more.

Labels will come in shortly tomorrow.

I hope it starts to look slowly more in the way I wanted.
One of my aims was to make this image look a bit like a William Turner Painting

It certainly has a very good, moody atmosphere. I'm impressed :)

09-24-2012, 02:54 AM
I wish I could paint like this.

09-24-2012, 03:00 AM
Hot damn! This is fabulous.

09-24-2012, 06:51 AM
Thank you for the positiv Feedback.
Its realy good to try new things out. Lately i am motivated to try to hit a job in the conceptart for Games. I am finished with university now and looking for a decent job. But well its kind of difficult here in my area to find something and i don't want to move. In this time and age, it should be possible to find a job that is possible to do from my desk at home.

The World is moving and i try to keep track of booth digital and analog Medias.

09-25-2012, 06:19 AM
That is just a thing of beauty! But I wouldn't yet call it a map.

09-26-2012, 07:08 PM
yes, have too think about how to convert it now

09-26-2012, 10:21 PM
Note that the challenge closes on the 26th (today). I'm holding off a little as I think that might have not been noticed by everyone - and another thread has a problem with a final entry attachment - but if you're doing any final edits they'd better be quick!
