View Full Version : May Entry: Mud Golem Cave

Watch out! if your players have new boots... the ground is still wet...

In order to get myself in a map making mindset, I told myself that even though I am new here I should enter the may contest... so today I made this simple cave map mostly trying to get as much texture as I could and still stay in the file size.

The overall shape is the Photoshop plug-in "clouds"... thresholded brought it down to a black and white matte then it was given some extra definition by hand.

Then I drew in the "mud" on two layers that had some bevel & emboss applied to it with a brush on a low opacity, and after some hue & saturation it was on to compression... anyway.

I gave it a spin in the RPGTonight VTT and it worked... but I was not playing an adventure so I guess in the end you all will be the judge.

Very nice caves...

Impressive! And a very effective use of the clouds filter. It's quite a workhorse for cartography.

Very nice! Plenty of ways to get ambushed when you're leaving tracks in the mud:D

Great cartoony / illustrative feel to the map - well done!

Lovely map, very generic and playable with a cool look and feel.

Hehehe, I wondered what it would look like to create footprint overlays to plop down on the mud as the players move about. This is just a test to see how it would look. It has some potential I think. :)

Most impressive.

Could you perhaps explain more about how you made your mud textures?

Yes... I have made a short tutorial on how I did it. See it here:

I really like your textures here. The map is great for those "I need an encounter now and I wasn't prepared for the players to head South instead of North" encounters. Just have the party find a cave and when the enter, throw randoms creatures at them. Nice!
