...A historic cartographer that I can source personal or second hand accounts of their expeditions aswell as plotted map data to go with it?

To, explain further, I am an illustrator working on a project for my end of degree year, and would like to create an illustrated account of a famous cartographers expedition.

I am not that well informed on cartography, so any information anyone can give me I would be grateful for

Hmmm, I'm not sure myself but I'd start with "Lewis & Clark" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_and_Clark_Expedition) which certainly includes maps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_Lewis_and_Clark%27s_Track,_Across_the_ Western_Portion_of_North_America,_published_1814.j pg) and if nothing else will probably give you links to other famous exploration teams.

Hope this helps.

Livingston and Stanley, perhaps?
