View Full Version : My Maps
05-22-2008, 09:31 PM
So as my first true post on here I decided to start posting the Maps I've done, all the one's I've inked at least. One thing I would like to note is all my Maps are Hand Done (Except the Real World Ones). I don't really do pretty Maps with fancy mountains and little forests and stuff. Instead I'm a Modernist Cartographer, I like maps that give the most information with the least clutter. Now I don't have a scanner so once I have to take pictures of each Map, But once I get some of the pictures I put them up.

If you appreciate minimalist presentation of data, I would suggest checking out Edward Tufte's books: http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/books_vdqi
Very insightful, and (imoo) directly applicable to all visual data presentations, including maps.

Poketia is the First of My attempt at making a map for my Advanced Pokemon Game Idea, See I love the Original Pokemon, The Manga is great and sometimes quite mature. I wanted to make an RPG for those of us that grew up with pokemon and never left. So this was my Map. I came up with the cool Idea of a Single Continent instead of Multiple ones. Now note that these Maps and the next posts are technically finished as they are the finished templates for the rest, it's almost impossible to redraw by hand a Map so I use Tracing Paper as a cover sheet with all my info. Also note that I cannot get access to the scanner right now but I really wanted to put these up tonight, so I used my camera and upload the photos on my Laptop, later I'll replace the Camera Pics with Scans.

In the olden days, when 150 were still more than sufficient... but let's not go there. The map looks fine, really. I appreciate the fact that it is handdrawn a lot.
PS: You get some Rep. Mainly for being tough enough to admit your intention of a Pokemon Rpg, and then for reinventing the setting's globe in such a good way.

Thank You Very Much, from researching Pokemon I have realized that all you need to do is tweak some things and suddenly it can be really cool for any age. So To delve into a little History of My reinvented Pokemon World.
Around 5000 years ago (100 BCE, CE being after the fall of the empire) the many cultures of the world had been conquered by a massive empire known as The Poketi <Aztec-Incan like>. The Poketi were most likely the most technologically advanced, and were heavy practitioners of Genetic Engineering. One of the major use of Genetic Engineering was in creating creatures for the sport of Gladiatorial Beast Combat, where Trainers would raise creatures (Known as Pokemon) to do battle against each other. By the time the Poketi Empire fell they had engineered so many species (So far there are over 9 Trillion identified species, most of these species have evolved in the wild however) that the now wild pokemon had almost completely taken over as the only form of life on the planet. Humans regressed to an Medieval Age Technologically. It wouldnt be until 4750 CE that Human would reobtain their past Technological Level.
The World is now only divided into two Powers, The League Of Governments (The League) and The New Order of Allied Territories (NOAT).
The League is the greater power controlling over 70% of the Worlds surface. It is a somewhat Capitalist state.
NOAT is a rebellious collection of nation states intent on overthrowing The League.
see so add a good plot, make the Pokemon actually look cool not cartoony, and up the action/ drama/ stuff a bit and boom... you got yourself something good. I had this image in my head of Pokemon being used in the rebel war, And the players can do either just be a group of Trainers creating a collection of the Pokemon, or you could expand to have them have to decide on the outcome of the war by being dragged into it.
Anyways NEXT POST

Okay after fixing the pics twice now I finally got them up there properly except the thumbnails are weird, oh well I least the actual images look good. When I get good at GIMP I'll probably do the maps again on there. make im really cool and stuff.
So, next set is an Unnamed map I did, again toying with the single super continent idea I had. In this one you can see my map making skills jump a whole level I think, with the inclusion of a Mediterranean like sea and stuff like that. as you can see the Mountains, rivers, and climate zones I was toying with are still on the map. This is the kind of thing I really think is the art to fictional cartography, not making pretty maps but making a world that is believable.
also note that somehow my camera made some of the pages look yellow which actually looks really cool

And this last one is possibly going to be Earth for My Heroverse.
I think I like this one the most of all, everything about it is perfect except the Fjords, which are way to big. also note how clean it is, This is what I mean by template.

Okay problem I can't seem to upload more than 5 maps, oh well I got my best up right now and I'll figure it out later, I need a break
none of the attatchments work for me, can't see your maps
05-24-2008, 08:53 PM
Hmmm, I'm getting a lot of 'invalid attachment' errors trying to see your earlier images...is anyone else getting these?
05-24-2008, 09:22 PM
Yeah, I'm seeing that, too.
edit: Testing a couple of attachments, just to see if it's a problem with the thead. One from my HDD and one from a web site.
edit2: It appears to be a problem with the URL. There are two slashes where there should only be one, and the URL appears to be truncated. The d=... is missing.

All these broken links to hot maps is the cartographic equivalent of a strip tease show :)
05-24-2008, 10:57 PM
I seem to only be able to load five maps at a time, the last three are loaded and didn't want to load anymore until I figured it out, I have remove those attachment from the Attachments Manager thing so I think now you can't see them, which is a bummer since It took forever to upload them.
05-27-2008, 03:24 PM
Hey Everybody Come Back I fixed them, It was purely an Operator error. I kept deleting them after I uploaded them
05-27-2008, 06:44 PM
Very nice coastlines! And none of them look like angry chickens.

Like clouds, sometimes you see things in a coastline that were never intended. I still can't look at the first map I posted here without seeing that chicken shape.
05-28-2008, 06:37 AM
It was an angry Nazi chicken, doing a Hitler salute I tell you! (sorry).
Agreed, nice coastlines, Arkkeeper, I know you're approach is minimalist, but do you intend to add more to the maps?
05-28-2008, 10:57 AM
OMG Midgardsormr your banner is awesome. I'm impressed that everyone thinks my coastlines are good as on some of them the Fjords ARE WAY TOO HUGE, and yes Ravells as I said before these are just my Templates, I then take traceing paper, copy the outline, and add stuff, like a physical map or political map, or precepitation, like a true Atlas. In fact If you visit my new thread, The Atlas Of ArkEarth, in World Mapping you'll see my current project including my template style mapmaking.
