View Full Version : *** January 2013 Mapping Challenge: Map based on Ruin ***

01-11-2013, 01:11 AM
We are running behind again so in an effort to allow everyone to catch up and end this one on time so we can hopefully get set for February...

Create a map based on "Ruin".
Perhaps a destroyed planet, a fallen castle, a burned out city or ancient archeological dig or even floating wreckage, whatever you can come up with. It can be real or fantastic.

The challenge will close on or around the 29th of the month (that's just the goal) to allow voting to take place and start the next one on time.

Please post your entry on a new thread and follow the naming convention set out in the contest rules (or just refer to previous entries in the archives to see how it's done).
Remember to include your ### tag information so your entry will be included on the thumbnails for the competition (see the rules thread or visit the archived challenges to see how it's done).

I figure since it's "Ruin" even an incomplete map should be able to pass if it's done right.

Have fun!

Sounds good, I've Ruined a few maps in my time!

Interesting topic.

01-11-2013, 10:47 AM
cool. i might try my hand at a hand-drawn isometric ruined castle-type thing, if i can muster the time...

01-11-2013, 02:17 PM
Hmmm, ruin? Well, I might just try to come up with something. Been slacking of for too long anyway. ;) Hope I can find the time ...

Hopefully I can participate in the late days of January.

Oooh! I like this theme! :)

01-12-2013, 06:57 PM
So many ideas. Must pick one....

Don't know much about the Gurps Midgard milieu like Diamond just treated us to (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/21195-midgard.html), but considering the Norse setting, if I run the calendar forward a century or two and suppose a major war, I could try a map of Rouen ruined, well runed.

Just Sei'ne...

You sir, deserve a boot to the head for that. :D

I got a kick out of Bogie's comment as well.
Sadly, I think it unlikely that I will be able to participate in this one due to time constraints and a commission I have to finish by month end. Any free time I have left will be spent on that.

If I finish and have some time for this or if I get mindlock and need to sketch something else to blow out the cobwebs, maybe. Alas, like many of you I too have a plethora of ideas on this theme.

Jax, like I have to remind myself periodically at my job - at least too much work is the right kind of problem!

Diamond, so are you sayin' you're ruein' the topic for this month?

01-13-2013, 11:04 PM
Oh man. What're you guys? Dralasites?

Cool topic, BTW. Will see if I have enough time and creativity to participate.

Based on "Many human comedians who could not find work in Human cities have become rich performing on Dralasite worlds." and a preference for loud plasma based weapons, I am either Dralasite or one of their near relations like Sgt. Schlock, or am a potential tradesman in corny repartee with them all. I'll let you know if I do get rich off old puns.

Personally I am encouraged by the potential in this month's topic of going straight to the ruined state of some location, not having to first imagine it in an intact condition. Seriously beyond any hope of humor, Rouen France suffered enough damage in 1944, documented in photos online, that I would be able to just map the real ruined state for this contest, let alone any fantasized GURPS-related ruination.

Sounds nice. I hope to be able to finish something this month.

Went to visit some ruins this weekend and thought "this might make a nice battlemap" so might go ahead and try that out.

01-15-2013, 11:07 AM
How do I map my life, though?

01-15-2013, 02:01 PM
That would be unique Waldonrate. Kind of like that old Ozzy song, "The Road to Nowhere (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kurSJDyU4PQ)".

Just a reminder to get your finishing touches in before the voting begins. This should be locked up tonight so voting can begin and we can hopefully start February on time.

Good luck to everyone!

I thought this was ending a few days ago, so I gave up. Should have worked on it last night!

01-31-2013, 11:33 AM
Was supposed to have been the 29th. Mods are probably busy with R/L...darn them! ;)

01-31-2013, 01:32 PM
dang, If I knew I had more time, I would have worked on mine for another two days...

01-31-2013, 04:31 PM
My rule of thumb : Post till they lock you out !! :D:D Or until you can't stand to look at your entry anymore !!
Lots of great entries by the way !! Maybe too many ! Decisions; Decisions!!

01-31-2013, 05:37 PM
What do you mean RL? This isn't it? :)

02-01-2013, 04:23 AM
Sup, Jax? We want the new challenge! ;)

02-01-2013, 01:22 PM
Drat, sorry all, I've been down sick the last couple days and also finalizing the handoff to the new owner after selling my r/l business. Today is the first day of my new life and wouldn't you know it, I'm sick. I mean what the heck?

Anyway, I'll lock this up and get the voting going in a few moments.

Sry to hear. Get well soon!
