View Full Version : *** June Challenge - Build Something for the CWBP ***

06-05-2008, 11:07 AM
It gives me great pleasure to announce the theme for the Cartographer’s Guild challenge for the month of June. The fact that I’m doing this announcement should have given you a clue. You guessed it, it’s the CWBP. If you don’t know what that is, where have you been? It stands for Collaborative World Building Project. Many of you are already involved in this project which has, as its aim, the creation by collaborative process, of our own, fantasy campaign world complete with maps and background info and everything else.

The challenge

You must create a map of a settlement or structure that fits thematically and geographically with the work already done on the project. It does not have to follow any style used in the project. You are welcome to map in whatever style suits you and that you are most comfortable with.

But……..You have to map one of the following things.

A walled town or city
An area of wilds approximately 20 miles across
A trading town next to a river
A coastal port
A stretch of road approximately 50 miles long
A ruin
An underground lair or mine

What you will need to do

You will need to have a look through the wiki (found here) and browse Seerblue’s very cool Google maps of the project found here. Find a spot that you like, either from what you see on the map or from what you have read about in the wiki, and go for it. Feel free to ask any questions on the CWBP forum that you may have as to the area of your choice or any other contextual information.

Areas will be dealt with on a first come first served basis. In other words if you choose to map a specific place, that place cannot be chosen by another mapper. Voting should be based primarily on artistic and mapping criteria and “coolness” factor, as well as how well the map fits with the areas already done in the CWBP and any relevant written content..

There are no prizes this month, but think of the fame, the adulation, and how fun you will be at parties from now on if you can say, “Yes, I’m in the project, what about it?”"

I was planning on working on the Nosferatu town north of Calishem on my Qashya Mal (western reaches) map. I was planning on doing this anyway, but since this challenge came up first - I will make it the challenge.

Walled town on a small mountain river (at a fork of two rivers), upland environs and perhaps the bloodstone mines just to its north as well.

I want to try a hand-drawn style using Torstan's technique with dodging and burning - that is hand-drawn/3D terrain effect (really quite cool!) Of course I don't use a tablet, so I'll do it slightly different. But this is my goal. 8)

Arkkeeper calls Arkender, Capital City of Groam, To be done as an in-world style map, hand drawn. Specifically the City itself, the surrounding sprawl-slums and land within at most 15 miles of it which makes up the entire Arkender County.

So I could map out the ruins of Fort Mere or the cave lair of some evil cultists on Hardy Island, both of which are locations on the Thumberton Island? Well, the cave lair isn't listed, but Hardy Island is.

Was there a problem with the links?

I found the wiki but where's the Google maps?

No Church in that list of options then... ;) Dang - better find another map then.

...where's the Google maps?

Try here: http://maps.me-dem.org/InsCarto/default.htm

Helium3 mapping Hardy Island would be great. That swamp is infested with Lizard Men who attack everyone in the swamp area. Death Chaser Fen is a real killing zone - a suicidal place to go. Theres a band of maybe 40 or so high level warriors like Vikings officially called "The Hard Ones" but more colloquially known as "The Hard Bast***ds" with a leader named Crazy Krull. The whole group are totally awesome Lizard Men killing machines that go completely berserk and pathologically violent in battle. Krull has a Lizard man headress and likes to taunt them before wading in. Nobody knows where they live but they meet merchants at Hardy Point or Hawker Point and escort them across the water for a large fee using several long ship ferries cutting out the long way around - right the way around via New Mere Fort to Mullion and northwards. Its assumed that they live on Hardy Island but nobody knows or goes there to find out.

I have a write up about Krull which I had better get around to uploading. My machine has been down but its up and limping now. I was due to give a demo of the VTT with a whole list of things to cover. I'll make sure I add a flyover of the island & Fort Mere.

Fort Mere is the old fort now in ruin. It used to protect the road running from Morton to Mullion but the water appears to be slowly rising in the swampland and the road got worse and worse until it was barely passable. This made it open to attack and people were being hit hard every time they went across it. The troops pulled back and let the Fort go defending it further south and building a new road just past Little Mere Fen which is also pretty dangerous but not as bad as before. Old Mere Fort and the whole area around that is pretty much a no go zone unless your up to a lot of chopping. It might have been taken over by Lizard Men by now... thats all very open ended.

Although Lizard men predominate, you could have any other marsh dwellers in there also. Maybe even a green dragon. Theres probably one in there somewhere.

I'll be doing the usual WIP thumbnail page. I have the script still - it survived the resurrection. If you could put...

### Latest WIP ###

at the end of your post for each time you want to make the next image attachment the thumb then it helps a lot.

Is there a tute on sticking an image into that Gmap interface?

06-05-2008, 05:47 PM
Toff! Stop asking questions and pick a location to map already!

Toff, I have a tutorial inwork for putting the maps into gmaps, but it is Global Mapper orientated, as that is what I use to tile the imagery. If you just want a quick way to put a map into google maps, GMapUploader (http://gmapuploader.com/) is dead easy, upload your image (16384x16384 pixels Max) and the site will process it and then give you a link to your new map. Connection speed needs to be pretty good for real large images. The link on the bottom of your map page will show a full screen image.
The page is pretty basic (http://gmapuploader.com/view/8mWcHfFSYB),
but you can get a google page and tweak the html to get something like this (http://seerblue.googlepages.com/mygmap)

If you view source on the misty mts page you can see that all that is really necessary to get a gmap into google pages is a key for the page and the js, which I copied from the js/html of the page made by gmap uploader and pasted into the google page while in html edit mode.

I'd like to try my hand at a slighted castle, done partially in 3d and partially in photoshop (as my May entry was) - any suggestions?

I think I might claim Irontown in the The Beastlands, if no one else has already. Still reading up on the region, but I'm somewhat picturing a mostly lightly fortified large town/small city, with several secured districts, and open to the river. Maybe even a few smaller rivers reworked into canals to move logs and ore into the smelter/smithing halls.

Toff! Stop asking questions and pick a location to map already!I know. I gotta get my magazine (http://wayfarer.mysteryandmagic.com) out; behind schedule as usual. If I have any time left in the month ... meh ... I really want to get in on one of these contests!

was there a link to the wiki?

did i miss it

Hi mathuwm, if you go into the main CWBP subforum it's at the top.

Fenridge Castle has caught my eye, if it has not been taken.

It would have a large garrison but not excessive to patrol the roads and hold the castle against surprise. 50 cavalry (on horses?) plus a substantial wyvern roost. It would command the high ground and the road, with wide patrols connected by wyvern messengers, and a few elite wyverns that do sweeps on their own?

What sort of civilian housing do you envison Redrobes? Do you have a castle style already in mind for the region?

What sort of civilian housing do you envison Redrobes? Do you have a castle style already in mind for the region?I don't have a style in mind, only that it has to be a big castle so I guess stone. Its one of the three big'uns along with Thrub and Morton. This would be excellent to map as Helium might do Hardy Island and RobA has said that he has some plans to put some kind of canal / lock system into the Roeborder Ridge area to try to link the sea with the inner lake. So maybe ill do Crazy Krulls path + the Hardy Point and Hawker Point which are not really inhabited anyway then that whole area has a bit of life to it.

I don't think there are many horses in Thrubmorton but for those that are in the region I think that this place would have them. So a cavalry would be a great spectacle. I suspect that the main ridge road would be pretty big and dry enough to ride on. They might have some additional & more exotic mounts for wading through marshy land. Cant think what, but there has to be something...

I expect that Thrub Castle has a cavalry too but Morton probably not. Its very probable that groups from Thrub and Fenridge shuttle between the two to protect the road. I can imagine that theres a path up Nortonspire for horses - its steep there but not impossibly so. That whole road is the main merchant run and its straddled either side by bad lands.

Edit -- The messenger wyverns are of a special type (Thrubmorton lesser wyverns) & quite small - about the size of a large dog. But I could imagine that full sized version could be used. You might have to have a special tower or something away from the town though. Can you imagine living next to them every day ? You could have wyvern riders like the Nazgul but (slightly) less scary. I reckon the town needs to be well protected too - another wall or palisade or something like that.

Sorry guys, looks like I'll have to drop out of this month's challenge - no time.

I just received a huge mapping commission - continent map, 12 regional maps, imperial capital map (200K residents), the first of twenty or so city maps (20K residents), continental area Underdark maps, a half dozen "sites of interest maps" ruins, etc., plus one tactical scale battlemap a week for the next year. He desires a series of illustrations and 3D landscape scenes - so my plate is very full, as my pocketbook!

Although the client is an invidividual GM for VT game, he plans to write a novel series and wishes to include maps as well.

I still want to create the Town of Darkovia in Qashya Mal, but it looks like it will be outside the challenge time period.

Sorry again! Good luck everyone else! ;)

06-11-2008, 05:41 PM
Wow! Congrats for the big comish! Make sure you get permission to posts WIPS and Finals here.

That's awesome GP! Don't forget about us when you become famous. ;)

06-12-2008, 04:55 AM
Congrats GP....that's going to keep you busy for a long while!

06-12-2008, 07:08 AM
I actually started mine But I'm having trouble getting it off the ground. I'll try and post a WIP

06-27-2008, 09:40 AM
Only to minimize the delay to next month's challenge, isn't voting time now?

06-27-2008, 11:21 AM
Yes it is. Thanks for the heads up. I've locked all the entry threads, but I don't have time right now (emergency at work) to get the poll up. Hopefully one of the other CLs can jump on that soon. If not, I'll take care of it in about an hour or so.

06-28-2008, 01:57 PM
Sorry to disappoint people, I ran out of time to do it. I just finished a Week long writing workshop, and the prep for it was already too much to handle.
