If you don't have Google Earth you owe it to yourself to give it a shot. Its a free program that displays maps on a sphere like you are seeing them on the earth.

Sketchup is another program that lets you make 3d buildings etc for inclusion in google earth.

The link below is to someone's recreation of a roman theatre in the town of Montpelier.

I found it very interesting to fly above the streets of the city to give me an idea of city blocks and mapping urban centers. Its a modern example, except for the theatre, but you'd be surprised at how congested historic towns were. There was only so much room inside the walls.
