Mark Smylie is an author and illustrator whose major work is known as the Book of Dooms. It is a cycle of stories about a female warrior named Artesia and the rather complex machinations that take place in the world she inhabits. In addition to being a gifted illustrator (check out his work for the Midgard RPG by Kobold Press), Smylie has also done some incredible maps for the second version of the rpg set in his world, currently in beta. You can find the maps at RPG Beta Playtest artesiaonline.com (http://artesiaonline.com/blog/?page_id=710) Some of them are quite eyecatching and incredibly detailed. Check out the map for the Free City of Newgate (http://artesiaonline.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Newgate-City.pdf), the Upper Dain Dania region (http://artesiaonline.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Upper-Dain-Dania.pdf) and Gyrdiff Castle (http://artesiaonline.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Gyrdiff-Castle.pdf) to name a few.

Really distinctive style, you can see he's kept quite close to real world references in his city maps. Snaffled for my inspiration folder. Thanks for posting, thebax!

His Castle maps are heavily referenced from Sydney Toy's book on castles and his drawings.
