View Full Version : Steammancers' Folly

I thought I'd continue the challenge map I did for the February challenge here. The plan now is to completely finish the city map, giving it a border and key etc. Then I'll probably take a bit of a break from it as I'm already starting to get a bit fed up with it. Then, once refreshed, I'll make a second version of the map showing the result of the Steammancers folly, which I will then incorporate into a single image to show the before and after comparison maps.
Anyway, here is where I am right now with it...
I've purposely left various elements in differing states of completion so you can see how I'm developing it.

This is going to be a really really great map. Well done on the recent challenge, by the way. It was well-deserved, even if you didn't actually deserve it. Clearly you've got the city well-in-hand, so I won't suggest anything there. The one thing I will say, though, is I think I preferred the name Limpet City to Steammancer's Folly. And since this is no longer part of a challenge, it would be a shame to drown this city unnecessarily. Looking forward to see where this goes.

This is going to be a great map indeed! I really dig the colours work.

Actually, the name is still going to be Limpet City for the first map. After the doom though, the region will be renamed to Steammancers' Folly. I figured I would name the thread that more as a declaration of intent to let people know that the folly is still coming. :)
I love the palette on this map so much. I am going to have to try out a similar scheme on some things myself I think.

Hey all, thanks for the encouragement.
I haven't got much work done on the actual map since the last update but I've spent the last few days adding a border.

Oh, good to see it getting finished. Amazing as all your jobs.
I like the border. The font you used to write "Limpet city", did you make it?
Looking forward to see it finished :)

@ Beoner, if I'm right, The font used is "DuererLatinConstructionCapitals". Hope Ramah don't mind I give a reply about it since he's not around ;)
btw great border :)

Wow; the colour scheme is quite unique, and the end-result is really pretty... Amazing job!

That looks absolutely awesome. Can't wait to see it finished!

And yes, Max is quite correct about the Duerer font.
Anyway... still chipping away at it...

Holy moly... I have to admit I lost a whole chunk of interest in this map days ago but I'm still trying to slowly drag it out of me...
Starting to get there at least.

Looking great. ;)

Nearly done with the actual map now. Should hopefully get on to adding some labels tomorrow. So first half should be completed soon... zzz.

This is just...wonderful :) Shading/lightning work is kind of perfect

Impressive; I love the way you've situated the city on the cliffs like that. It looks realistic, like nothing relies on some vague "extraordinary" means of support - the city looks solid and "natural". The detailing, shading, and hand drawn (but very clean) line work is just beautiful. The color scheme reminds me of gears and brass (and steampunk; forgive the association if that's not what you're going for).

the text in the text bar on the left is a bit blurry but other than that slight nitpick, looking great (i can see how you didn't have enough time to finish this last month!)

Max - I've actually taken a lot of artistic licence with the shading/lighting with multiple shadows on shadows, shorter shadows to aid legibility, longer shadows to aid definition etc. etc. so it's far from perfect but I thank you for the compliment. :D
Kestrelgrey - That is indeed the association I am going for so no need to forgive anything. :)
Vorropohaiah - That text isn't set in stone at all. I may even move that particular piece to the box in the bottom right and use it as the title. Just about to get started on adding some text right now. :) And yeah, I was being hopelessly naive in thinking I would get anywhere near finishing this. Hehe. Although having said that, I have been taking it very easy since the contest finished and I didn't intend to make it quite so detailed/busy at the time. I'm just taking the opportunuity to take my time over it which is strange because I am getting totally sick of the sight of it. :S

Yes I noticed the lot of work on shading and really liked it :)
