Hey all,

This is my last map, fantasy continent of Selvarin. It's done in Photoshop, with a mix of hand-drawn elements and digital work. The original size is 7795x10866 px (66x92cm) and actual uploaded size is a bit less than 50% with lower resolotion. For those who want to check the details I also split the map in four parts (100% size and lower resolution). The map also contains some special features : I wanted to make some humble tribute to a few Guild's cartographers of whom I like the works. Ten or so labels are therefore inspired by some CG's maps I like, slightly modified, more or less easy to spot. I probably forgot some of great cartographers here though, apologizes about it :D
I wanted to thank those who follow the work progress in the WIP thread (http://www.cartographersguild.com/regional-world-mapping/22419-wip-selvarin-fantasy-map.html), especially Vorropohaiah, Eilathen and Arsheesh for their support. thanks again :)

I hope you like it, comments are welcome!

Feel free to rate, rep or run away :)

very nice map. love the work on the labels and key and the colours.

03-20-2013, 10:06 AM
Wow! I have to say that those shields really are impressive. Did you make them?

I like the mountains and forest, specially the mountains, but I have to say that the cliffs look a little weird, not ugly, just a bit different from the rest of the map. At all is still a great map, the colours are also very well used. Have some rep ;)

Edit: nevermind at the shield question, just read the WIP thread :P

This map is fantastic! I love the great amount on details on it! The heraldic, icons, labels and use of colours are just awesome. The assets for those points of interest is just a great idea and really fit in the map. I don't have enough posts to rep you but this map is 5 stars-worthy

03-20-2013, 11:11 AM
Wow Max, this is grand. I really love the little details with the symbols along the map borders that make it clear who's land is where. I may have to use that idea myself one day. There is a lot to enjoy about this but I had to come say so before I dove back in.

03-20-2013, 11:17 AM
Ok Max this is pretty awesome, very good job!!

03-20-2013, 12:13 PM
What a beautiful map! I love the colours, symbols, as well as the use of heraldry in place of country names. Really awesome!

03-20-2013, 02:20 PM
Inspiring and amazing. Congrats for the nice work.

Guys, don't forget to check the Muraile de Fer :D

03-20-2013, 02:25 PM
This is absolutely fantastic Max! I too really love the work you've done on the shields. This is going into my inspiration folder.

Stunning! Repped and rated.

Thanks much all you guys! Comments much appreciated :) As some people asked me I'll may do a tutorial on the shields soon when I'll have some spare time (since it's not that hard to make them :D )

@Aquarits : you may want to check an eastern area in the Khanat de Sebassaher too ;)
@Jaxilon : Glad you liked this detail, I thought it was a pretty goodway to remind who's where since I didn't put nations names on the map, prefering to use shields and a heraldic key

03-20-2013, 03:53 PM

03-21-2013, 12:23 AM
In case some people were wondering what TheCurlyPower had written. He pretty much said that you did a truly magnificient job Max. The map is really immense with so much detail. Great work! A purely indicative title, How much time have you spent for this realism?

But like everyone said this is really amazing work :) you did a fantastic job. I can't wait to see the next map you make.

Thank you Curly and Stormhawk! I've started the map near one month ago but I don't really know exactly how much time I've spend on it :/ Sometimes I just worked one hour on it, sometimes, some full evenings or week-end.

I saw that your amazing map were made in french ! (i'm a french guy, sorry for my very poor english)
Can you give us more information about the continent ? For what use was it done ?

03-22-2013, 07:09 AM
excellent !!!

Beautiful work, Max. I love the palette. Wonderful stuff. :)

Thanks Ramah and Mahar! ...Ramah...Mahar...Funny :D
@Mahar : When I first started the map, I just had a few general setting about the whole continent and the several nations. I created a lot of labels and stuff while mapping to help me go further on the setting /history of the continent in case I'll need it. I'll be honest : I rather have pleasure to map than to worldbuild. Seems it's more easy for me on personnal projects to map and create some stuff from the map when it's done than create a world and map it.

This map is absolutely gorgeous. The sheer amount of detail is amazing.

My first thought was: Oh my, it is so light. The colours are so nice!
My second thought was: Oh my, my monitor is too small!!! What a great line-up of detail! Icons, shields, ornaments, little descriptions of locations - you go into this map and just get lost discovering one excellent graphics after another. And all that without getting too crowded. Great!

One thing I would mention as not perfect is the legibility of the font in the forest of sidjukistev. A dark outline as in the other forests would have been better to clearly distinguish i from l and v from y between all those trees. The names of the two settlements within that forest aren't clear, too. But typography in general is very solid without missing style - as always.

Another thing is the lack of consistency in line art. The Outlines of mountains are thicker as much other map features as buildings. The lines of cliffs are a bit more blurry. Streets are very slim. But this isn't really that bad because it's all for different elements. What I like is the high number of different things on the map without looking overloaded.

I like those little spots/circles near the coastline. Never seen that before. Nice!

It's huge! It's epic. It's a masterpiece again.
One more time I'm deeply impressed of your work.

Excellent map, great attention to detail!

03-23-2013, 01:03 AM
Nice one Max, you've done it again.

Thanks very much guys, comments much appreciated!
@ Freehand : thanks about the constructive critics. You're right about Sidjukistev label. For some reason, the outer glow missed on this one. Thanks to your all seeing eye for pointing that out ;) For the line art you're probably true, mountains were hand drawn and other elements were made in the software, that's probably the reason but I'll try too keep it on mind for next maps :)

This is a gourgous map, it's the type of map I want to create for my fantasy novel. Great job.

Thanks Lonewriter, glad you liked it :)

04-06-2013, 02:54 PM
This is really just breathtaking. I recognize the brushes and stuff, but it blends together so naturally into a complete product. Like others, I really like the way you broke up the territories, and the shields are amazing.

04-06-2013, 03:06 PM
Absolutely excellent. I love the mountains and landscape.

I love the basis of your map, the colour scheme and layout. Is there somewhere you followed to create the landmass/colour scheme/basic look?

Overall its an amazing map, seems very personalized and polished.

Thanks :) If you mean the workflow/process of the mapping, you might find some things on the WIP thread here (http://www.cartographersguild.com/regional-world-mapping/22419-wip-selvarin-fantasy-map.html) Hope it answers your question.

Amazing work, Max! I'm a Photoshop beginner and have to confess that my dream is creating such a masterpiece someday. Also, do you think it would be much difficult to use a real world map and edit it instead of using photoshop's generation?

08-20-2013, 08:14 PM
Yes, i see where you have borrowed specific things from other artists, and i can see much of my first Hyranden map in this. Nice work.

08-20-2013, 10:26 PM
Wow...just wow. I can't believe that this was all done by hand. This is incredible!

Thanks much guys :)
@Joao : I prefer drawing coastlines without using real worl shapes but that works well too. I guess it's a matter of taste.

Fantastic map Max! So many details to pour over. :)

Btw, were you able to do that tutorial on heraldic shields by any chance? I'm trying to create some circular Japanese-like clan crests but have no idea how to put it all together in PS. =/

Hey Sharpes, thanks! :) Unfortunately, no tutorial on the heraldic yet, sorry and I won't promise I'll do one :D

Keep the great work up!

Fantastic, really amazing work.

So inspiring!

This map is truly great... I've pored over it for so long over the last week =) I'm totally in love with it. I like all of your maps a ****load, Max, but this I think is my favourite overall.

One question for you: how did you do the trees in Photoshop? I can't figure out how to make brushes not grayscale so right now the only method I can think of is drawing them by hand and copypasting them which sounds painstaking but if that's what it takes to get the look you did in your forests then I'm down... but if you have an easier way, please share ^^

You can find some answer in a mini tutorial I've made in the WIP thread here (http://www.cartographersguild.com/regional-world-mapping/22419-wip-selvarin-fantasy-map-9.html) :)

Hi Max. Your map is totally beautiful and inspiring. It puts my work to shame and makes me want to revisit my maps and attempt to bring them closer to the quality you have created here. I especially love the use of the heraldry, and I think from now on I'll be adding that sort of embellishment to anything I do in the future.
Well done and congratulations! Repped.

04-14-2014, 08:39 AM
This is fantastic. I am new to making maps. How do you get the lines around the coast which represent the depth of water? I am only using gimp but i am getting PSP soon. Just needing to know how this works. Thanks
Great map!!!!

04-14-2014, 09:21 AM
Thanks. There's several ways to achieve it. Diamond made a tutorial about one of them here (http://www.cartographersguild.com/tutorials-how/25727-smooth-coastlines-concentric-coastal-rings.html).

04-16-2014, 06:49 AM
As a frustrated noob, this map makes almost cry, it's so beautiful, so polished and so well done, I wish I was 1/8 as good as that. Congratulations!

Thnaks Groovey. The map though looks a bit "old" to my eyes now :D

04-19-2014, 07:19 PM
Very nice. How many time to get such a result ? Is it possible to get the same render with Gimp instead of Photoshop ?

04-20-2014, 07:50 PM
<Whistles softly> I wish I could make something like /that/.

04-24-2014, 08:09 AM
wow great map max..!!

04-25-2014, 05:38 AM
Thanks much guys!

@Oterrien : Honestly I don't really remember how much time I spent on it. The map is kind of old now and I would probably make it faster if I would redo it now :D

05-28-2014, 08:07 PM
So many good things to say about this map, I'll just pick the mountains. Great handiwork and great shading.

Wonderful work all around Max. The color scheme, shields, icons. All of it. :)
