I'll be using the below map as my base, though i've decided to rotate and flip the map:

The map is a detailed view of a region known as Khamid, which was destroyed my a magical cataclysm some centuries ago, leaving the place a region of steep-sided islands amid a treacherous sea. most cities in the area were wiped out, though some areas remain as ruins:

Cataclysm, the: Historically, a Firmamental calamity that occurred c. 100 RM (believed to be 90 RM by some scholars) in ancient Khamid, destroying the majority of the land of Khamid, almost doubling the size of what is now the Dark Sea, creating the Broken Lands in the process. A powerful Firmamental ritual is believed to be the cause of the disaster, the HieronÚsimus Marduk the man behind it, though the details are unknown.

Hmm yea probably not the best coastline you did...BUT....What a nice border! :D Brown/turquoise colors will perfectly fit the theme you chose

I've been meaning to try out a pattern coastline for a while now and after seeing your latest map thought I'd try it. its fun looking through the internet for patterns to use. I downloaded a few dozen interesting things I'm keeping for future maps.

i know, i should be concentrating on the map itself, though i got carried away with the iconography. i'll start on the map proper over the weekend... i hope :)

In my opinion, a lot of challenges are won on the strength of border decoration, cartouches, layout etc then on the map itself. Yours look beautiful!

thanks :) i have to say i did enjoy pasting the patterns together and messing about with scales to get them looking right, same with the cartouche.

I have a very busy month ahead, finishing off my apartment ready for deliveries and installations and some commissions as well, so im trying to get this done as quickly as i can for the challenge. i can always finish it off and polish it later on. really hope i manage to get it done in time

Some more work on the map. One thing i need to try and do is speed up my work, I spend too much time messing about and dilly-dallying (yes, i just said dilly-dallying :) ) and very little on the actual map. Perhaps I can use these challenges to try an hone my concentration...

Started labelling. will need to face the music and do the key and mountains soon. :)

thanks to Aquarits and Chashio, whose tutorials on offset lines (http://www.cartographersguild.com/how-do-i/22661-lines-off-set-parallel-photoshop-2.html#post212211) helped me out with the coastline

thanks :)

Spent a bit of time on the towns and features, making each one from scratch. There's room for a few more, though I don't want to add too much as the region is meant to be quite barren.

And I've also started work on the mountains, having decided to try out something new. Rather than individual mountains cloned across the image I've decided to go with fully hand-drawn ones. more-time-consuming, though hopefully more fitting.

Looking fantastic as always. I really can't think of anything to critique; make a mistake so I can feel like I'm helping you with input. :D

Great map so far. Some of the icons seem to have a different perspective, though, which looks a bit odd.

the only one i know is blatantly different is the icon for Sheref Nel, and i was thinking of changing that. the others seem 'ok' to me, though i wasnt sticking religiously to any particular perspective. though the lighhouse at the top of the map looks strange at the base

Sheref Nel or the Lighthouse of Lahkel look like I would stand in front of them, while Kemeth or the Collossus look like I would be above them. But that's really a minor issue IMO, the icons look great anyway. Did you draw them in PS or a vector program?

vorropohaiah

completely done in PS. i have no idea how to use any vector software, though I've been meaning to try out inkscape for a while now. i do think it will probably suit my mapping sytle better than PS, but im still leafning the ins and outs of PS, the last thing I need is to start learning a new piece of software now... :)

I very much like the land-shape! I do think that the Information-Box is too big...it covers up a lot of the western land-part.
Interesting mountain-style.

Looking forward to the finished map.

Hehe. Though the map's subject is the island in the middle. If I can justify filling the cartouche with lots of information I'll keep it large (i do like a packed cartouche), if not I can always make it smaller later on. at the moment nothing comes to mind, so I might make it smaller.
