Hi all,

I'm starting a new WIP with the Ring of Kryll (obvious name is obvious :D ), mainly to test out a new mountains set but who knows where it will go? Size is 14" x 14" for now and I just did the land shape and added base textures for now (as usual, both size and textures might change over the workflow :D )

I like your grungy background texture. Now, let's make these mountains !

Cool mountains.
Quick question, do you make them by hand and then scan, or entirely on computer?

Good luck on this, ;)

Thanks :) It's hand-drawn then scanned.

Update : Added border frame/ornaments. I figured a circled design would fit right a map called The Ring. Also added rhumblines and compass, waterlines and did a very light color work on mountains

Nice blending of the Elements, only thing bothering me are the lines overlapping the Compass elements.

True that :) This will be fixed on next update!

Slowly building forests, also fixed the overlapping rhumblines on compass roses and add hatched shade on coastline.

Oooh, I like that crosshatching on the coasts!

Question: How are you going to put in rivers, since you already have so much forest there? Are you going to cut away some trees?

- Max -
04-27-2013, 02:51 PM
Currently adding them, the rivers are on a layer underneath the forest one, so when a river crosses a "dense" forest" you won't see it that much until it goes outside.

Some progress : warmed it up, added rivers and started labeling work on northern part (using a mix of curved labels for mountains and straight ones for others locations)

I'm glad someone else is using that Windlass font; definitely one of the best looking fonts I've seen...

Yes really true! Mixing classical old feeling with a bit of fantasy touch. Thanks to have inspired the use of it ;)

I think you shoud rework the Textures and some linework. Sometimes sharp areas mixing with blurry lines, that doesnt match up for me.

Thanks for the feed back, I'll see what I can do about it ;)

make a set of 6 images like this and get them printed up as coasters and sell them on etsy - they'll look great!

Some more progress : added a light crosshatching overall the lands and worked on heraldry. Basically, Kryll is ruled by then major Houses that learned the power of sacred glyphs. Houses heralcry shields wear the symbols of those glyphs. The heraldry shows mains Houses influence in the cities.

love the shields in the city names. i tried something like this time ago and isnt work. Liked the hatching in the land ( i adopted it since i saw in one of your old maps) wut you do to it get smooth near the mountains?

well, guess the land still overlaping a compass in down right side, near Point de Khasbet.

Can you share the mane of the font in your labels?

- Max -
04-29-2013, 06:24 PM
Thanks Aquarits :) Hmm the hatching is the same everywhere, just the color changes near the mountains, maybe it's the lower resolution that makes it. And yes the Land overlap the compass but it's not an issue ;)
The labels fonts are Windlass ( thanks Diamond ;)) for the Title/ geographic areas and ImFell double pica for the cities labels/key

Like that very much!
The trees look like they're floating a bit. ;) Did not keep me from plopping it in my favorites folder.

But those are magical floating trees! Oh wait...no magic things excuses allowed.... :D

I like it. I especially like how you put rhumb lines in the ocean. They give the map a lot of character.

Splendid done Shields, they blend in perfectly. Way better than I imagined when you talked about them.

Thanks you guys :)

thanks. though I changed the rhumblines to "cleaner" ones following SchwarzKreuz suggestion. Those ones are a cool old feeling but yes they are too blurry and thick to match the compass.

I thought they would overcrowd the map but at the end not that much :)
