I decided to zoom in on a portion of my Tir Oiche map from last month. The region I chose has a lot of potentially interesting stuff for a campaign, including a lich-king's valley, a large plain dominated by goblin tribes, several strong (and not so strong) dwarven and human nations, a couple of city-states, and other assorted stuff.

First WIP to come soon...

Nice. Be interested to see how you hexify this.

Okay, here's the first WIP. Basic shapes and colors done; I decided to make this a true hexcrawl map - solid colors, terrain icons, the works.

What happened to the southern Iceareal

Oh, it will be there. Haven't put it in yet.

Well, this is nothing on the scale of SK's or Carbus's entries, but like I said, I'm going for a true old school hexcrawl feel. I think once I get more terrain types in there it'll start to take shape...

I think this is going to be a Diamondfail this month. Not out of any time contraints... I've just come to the conclusion that I need more thought and practice before I can attempt something like this.

At least you're attempting. I'm too sc'red. I'm having a hard time with my hobby map as it is O.o

Well i struggle too on this. And watching Carbus somehow did discourage me a Lot, if i could beat him at all

Ahhh cmon... you could easily create a better map in one day! I'm doing it for 2 weeks and still has a lot of things missing :(. I hope you can finish your map, before or after the challenge, because it's already very nice :)

Practice? What better way to do so than by completing the challenge? Hey whether or not it's a winner it will still have been worth the effort.

Yup, Carbus's entry is one of the one's to beat (I also really dig mariuccij's entry). But I've seen your work, if you aren't up to the task then none of us are. Course even if yours is not the winning entry it will still have been worth the effort to try out new techniques. Hell if I weren't busy furiously trying to finish my current dissertation chapter (and working on a commission on the side) I'd start a map today, despite the steep competition.

Cheers,

Y'know what, Arsheesh? You're right. I'll take another stab at this. Got a long weekend coming up...

Allright, its true, the training is valuable. And its still time.

Think of all the awards you've already won!

SK has inspired me to try my own frenzied, last minute, 24 hour rush job. I decided to move the focus a bit north and west from where it was originally, mainly because I didn't feel like drawing glaciers. That's kind of what's been tripping me up the whole time here. I'm also going to go much simpler and stay in black, white, and gray, and get away from slavishly staying in the lines for each hex/terrain type, and go for something much more free-form. I guess you guys will be the final arbiters on whether it works or not. :D

Done. (Unless anyone sees any typos or glaring errors...) Definitely not what I envisioned when I started, but hey, it was a learning experience. I'll do better next time.

Clean and nice work as always Diamond. I like the black and white choice for this entry!

I like it a lot, man. :)

The only thing I would say is that the forest symbol seems a little blurred compared to, say, the mountains. I would be tempted to either sharpen up the forest symbol or blur the mountains so they gel more.

Great stuff.

Always love how you keep it simple and clean Diamond!
Very nice work :)

Thanks to Ramah for pointing out the blurriness issue on the forests. Hopefully this looks a little better.

It is. Maybe add a little more of opacity to the trees so they matach perfectly the mountains?

Diamond
05-31-2013, 09:43 PM
That was actually intentional. I didn't want them quite as dark as the mountains; to me, it's easier on the eyes this way.
