View Full Version : May/June Lite Entry - Shipwrecks of the Iron Sea

05-21-2013, 05:30 AM
I discovered this challenge while playing with random land generation methods in the GIMP, at almost the same time that I came up with a really interesting Scandinavia-esque sea - so what better way to start out on this forum?

I'm planning a touristy map of the shipwrecks of the area, with some details about each one (name, date, tonnage, &c) in a seperate section.

Ooh, this looks to be a nice beginning. And welcome to the Guild flatworlder! Very ambitious of you to begin your first map with a Challenge entry. Now that's what I call taking the bull by the horns. Have some rep for bravery. I look forward to checking back and seeing this map progress.

Sounds interesting and looks really good already. This'll be a tough contest…

Yes indeed, welcome to the Guild and the Challenge! Nice start on your map.

Great idea, and good-looking start! Welcome to the CG.

Thank you for the welcome, everyone!

I've added some labels, and a bit of other detail (including an hour or so spent making an svg logo for the bottom there) and I'm almost reading to start mapping out the shipwrecks themselves.

Very nice. I'm quite impressed. Looks like there will be a lot of very good submissions for this challenge.

I've added some lighthouses (with their date of founding) and cities.

I like the icons for the lighthouses, simple and very unambiguous.

I've done about half of the wrecks, colour-coded by diving difficulty. I'll get the rest finished later today or tomorrow, along with a legend.

My favorite has got to be Superfuel Dolphin. :D

06-09-2013, 06:18 PM
I decided to move Superfuel Dolphin to the other side of the map, just to even it out a bit.

The results are not quite perfect, but I'm pretty happy with it, and I'm not going to have time to work on it any further, so this is the final update.

I've added the rest of the wrecks, and moved a couple of them from the previous one to prevent clutter, plus adding a scale and legend, and it's done.

I'm actually really happy with the stories that this map tells. Even without planning it at first, there are a few obvious stories, and some interesting other ones. Maybe I'll use this in a Call of Cthulhu game at some point. Why were those cultists on the Linelayer Maria?

Nice work Flatworlder

I love this map, but as a diver the only thing that glares out at me is that you haven't listed site depths. Have you considered putting those in?

Pretty nice work but the fonts used really don't match together.

I'm struck by the same thing as –Max–, the fonts make me feel like the map doesn't know if it's modern or fantasy, in a way… Otherwise, I really like it. The lighthouse symbols especially are very cool.
