Hey all,

Here's my latest map, the City of Yphyrion. On this one I wanted to try something close to some late 19th century style inspiration (top down view, hactched buildings blocks and a bunch of streets labeled). The labeling work did take some time (and a ton of layers - actually the whole psd file contains 1322 layers) but I'm pretty satisfied of how it turned out. The city layout layout was first quickly sketched on paper then drawn in PS. Then all the job was done in PS, including hand made border.
Map's full size is 13"x18" (uploaded version is half size). You can find the WIP thread here (http://www.cartographersguild.com/town-city-mapping/23483-wip-yphirion.html). As always, thanks to those who have supported the process and gave comments and advices. Much appreciated.

I hope you' ll like it. Comments are welcome.

Feel free to rep, rate or un away :)

Another nice map, Max, although it seemed to take you longer this time. You must be slipping ;)

A very beautiful map, elegant, yet bold. Love this stuff man.

06-11-2013, 07:18 PM
Absolutely stunning Max! Your work is top notch.

Inspiring work Max :) I'd rep you but I have done so too recently already lol

If you ever have the time, I'd love to see a tutorial for this, Max.

Thanks much guys!
@THW : probably because of my old age :D
@ Diamond : I should have thought of it during the process :/ but really nothing really hard to here. For buildings blocks, basically outlines are done with a lightgrunge round brush, added a shadow by hand with a darker line, filled with color on two layers. then added some pattern in the color filled block first layer with blending mode layer option(adjusting blending mode and opacity). Then selected the color blocks layer, reduced, feathered and erased the selection so that you could see the second colored layer underneath.

This is really stunning! Another beautiful map Max!

Thank you! Glad you like it :)

Its great to see so many new maps from you. The City is slendid and I would like to see more of such complex maps. And I can agree to Diamond, a breakdown of the Working layers could be interesting to understand your way of working.

This is an amazing city map! I love the French and the labeling you did. :)

06-17-2013, 07:07 PM
As everyone else is saying, great map!

Yphyrion is a strange name, and, as far a Google Translate says, it isn't a French word. So, a couple questions.

1) How do you pronounce it? and
2) How the heck did you come up with it? :P

Thanks much guys! Comments appreciated :)
@ SK : I would If I hadn't to work on many projects :p
@ Amino : Glad you like the french touch :) many people here beg me to label some maps in english (which is understanable I guess :D )
@ Foremost : This is a fictional city with a fictional name. 1) Something like ee-fee-rion but well pronounce it the way you feel the best, it's up to everyone ;) 2) Like I came with most of fantasy/fictional labels : just sounds good to my ears!

Woaw ! I must say your work here is quite minutious and particularly inspiring ! I really like the style of your map as well as the details in the name of the streets. Congrats !

06-18-2013, 08:01 AM
@Max, I'm Romanian, which is sort of like French, so I can pronounce French, and I can understand bits of it. However sometime's it's definitely much prettier than English.

Thanks Guladroth! I appreciate that you notice the work done on it ;)
@ Amino : I'm totally agree with that :D

I really like this map, especially the fortress area which, though I'm not an expert, seems very historically accurate for the period. I'm really interested in the layout of your streets; I'm trying to plan a battlemap set in a city and so I always like to see examples of how streets are laid out.

Nice work!

Thanks much Meshon :) I took my inspiration from many 19th century cities maps, that helps a lot to set a decent layout. The fortress is a bit older (this kind of ones were built during the 17th/18th century but many europeans cities still have parts of them surroundings their areas.

The linework. The colours. the ornaments. the typo.
All fits very well.
Again one very nice map of yours.
I love it.

What an impressive masterpiece!!! :o
You perfectly got the 19th century-style. It looks like taken from a Verne's adventure. :)

You are definitely very talented Max and this city map is nothing but gorgeous. It is very inspiring and I think I have to develop my city drawing techniques a bit after seeing this.

Thanks Loller :D

This is a great way to do a city - with environs, and city blocks, instead of individual buildings. I really like it. Quenten

- Max -
11-07-2013, 04:26 PM
Thanks Quenten! Yes it's pretty much adapted at this scale and fits more some "modern or pre-modern era style, where buildings are too numerous to be shown properly.

I don't know you--just joined today--but that's awesome.

It's awesome, Max. A great job indeed. I love steampunk and your work fit perfectly this genre, it's amazing. And I'm happy to read that you work with Photoshop, 'cause that means that I can reach your same level with this program...hypothetically :P

Just a question: how did you draw your trees?

- Max -
12-16-2013, 07:16 PM
Thanks guys!
@ hehe good luck! About the trees, I draw a single one then turned it into brush and used it with dynamic settings (angle rotation and size variation). Then I added a touch of pale green color on each of them :)

12-19-2013, 06:18 PM
Hey, that's really neat! Great job! :)

Really cool map! Which fonts did you use?

- Max -
01-02-2014, 06:10 PM
Thanks Boldar, I use Oldstyle font on this one.

Thank you! A tutorial really would have been great... If you could think about it next time you'll make a city map you'd make me a happy man :D

- Max -
01-06-2014, 09:47 AM
You're welcome. I'll think about it though tutorials are time consuming and I'm not sure to have this spare time to make one ;)

01-14-2014, 02:11 PM
1322 layers? urgs ... crazy! Is it usual, using such a bunch of layers?

- Max -
01-14-2014, 03:52 PM
:D it was a bit particular on this map since a bunch of layers are streets labels layers ;)

What is "Le Gueulard" ? A mass-public transit system ?

Awesome city map, Max. I'm a professional city planner and urban designer, and I don't see much work that is as aesthetically pleasing as this. Very inspiring. I'm going to be thinking of this map a lot as I work.
