I always did like to bite off more then i could chew. So this is it - my start. I think i have several maps that have gotten to this point - yet never any (digitally) that have gone beyond. So I'm posting it here as a work in progress. Just let my instincts take over and combine a lot of what i had read in several tutorials and this is what i came up with.

It's a much larger image then what i'm posting, so it will have a lot of detail - i'm some what of a perfectionist - which explains my inability to practice. The urge to get it right the first time is a hard one to overcome.

Anything you can say, recommend or add will be helpful.

*I'm not to happy with the ocean texture. I'll need to figure out a way to make it more to my liking. But I'm going to retire for the night. Or early morning...

HAHA Just noticed this. There is a canine in my map! Mischievous devils!

I really like the shapes you came up with. Were they hand drawn or did you use a terrain generator? Also I think it could use some smaller islands off the coasts (personal opinion, Im definitely not an expert) Otherwise I think it looks really good!

I like what you've done here Miranda :) As long as we are looking for animal shapes your southern continent almost looks like a bird trying to take a bite out of the northern one!

I really like where it's going. I think that the ocean texture could possibly work if you could reduce the contrast on it, so the texture wasn't as noticeable.

I was very proud at my first attempt at a coat of arms... or heraldry marker so im posting it!

Very nice shield, I like the asymmetry and colors a lot. How about using the blue fields from it as your ocean texture, if you weren't happy with it?

Very nice coat of arms!

And as Alex mentioned it could be nice to see some more islands to the coast. Maybe even an archipelago on the south west coast of the southern island, or maybe even isolated in the south west part of your map.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see more!

Oh - sorry this took so long! I used the tutorial from Jezelf on this site to create the territory.

So I'm on a kick to knock out my Heraldry - its helping me create the lore of my map mentally that is - So as long as im motivated im doing more shields.

However.... im just know so sure about this next one. I'm having trouble with the Icon. I'm not sure if it needs something else - or if it needs to be changed all together.

Does the wolf look like it belongs on this shield?

Not really, such a shield would probably having some centered element. The wolf would fit better a round shield imo.

Thank you Max! That's exactly the opinion i needed... thank you so much!

Miranda, if you're interested, I have a heraldry topic in "General and Miscellaneous Mapping" you might be interested in:

No problem Miranda. Also you can check some of my maps where I use heraldry, Selvarin (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/22689-selvarin-fantasy-map.html), Kryll (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/23212-ring-kryll-fantasy-map.html) and Kesh (http://www.cartographersguild.com/regional-world-mapping/23261-wip-kingdoms-kesh-fantasy-map.html) (currently WIP) if it helps.

I'm running out of steam with my heraldry so I'm stopping for a bit. I like what i have so far but i will most likely keep tweaking them as time progresses.

Seems pretty decent job though you may want to test the shields on your map in order to adjust colors and tones.

Lovely heraldry! Do you draw the designs yourself or do you find them somewhere? Great job either way. I think the wolf, the tree and circle, and the mermaid could be slightly smaller, especially the mermaid almost touches the edge of the shield. Of the two mermaid versions, I like No-Wave better, it makes the character stand out more.

With the Mermaid crest. I'd use both, but for the waves, make them much more pronounced so they'd be an additional element. That way, the two would be separate yet related crests.

MAX - Oh i plan on it, for now. These where done a little rushed so i plan to sit on them for a while. Once its time to put them on the map then ill start making a few more and adjusting what i have. Thanks again Max!

LINGON - They where symbols i found in various brush and custom shape packs for photoshop. I think that actually looking for the shapes was the hardest part. Most of them where free - but i spent around 10$ for two packs. It was worth it. And i think ill take you up on the suggestion to make them smaller! Thank you.

WILLP - The only problem i could see with that is the fact that i don't actually foresee myself needing both crests. But thank you for the tip on making the waves more pronounced - maybe that will help me decide.

I love that green shield with the brown organic looking decal on it!! Are all the designs original?

Lovely work on the heraldic shields Miranda, looking forward to seeing them on the map.

The only problem i could see with that is the fact that i don't actually foresee myself needing both crests.

You might not need both, but keep in mind that in real world heraldry, when families or political entities combine, normally through marriage, then a common method is to combine the crests (Think of Spain's coat of arms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Spain) for an extreme example). I'm not sure how far you are planning on taking the world, but using that rule makes a quick and easy way to multiply the number of crests you have as well as give some quick visual history.

Okay here is my first update on my actual map not much I know but between working 6 days a week and being a mom there is only so much I can do in 24 hours!

Comments on the lake placement would be nice; I think they work with the overall flow of the continents.

Just to address the issue of the non-existent islands. The reasoning for that is this map or what I believe this maps purpose is going to be is for a story of mine. If that is the case then there are no islands that are relevant to the story line.
